Voluntary Action Merthyr Tydfil has released a new film highlighting the life-saving impact of voluntary organisations.

"Because We Weren’t There..." showcases the important role that voluntary organisations play in supporting local people and strengthening communities across Merthyr Tydfil and Wales.

Through powerful stories and real-life examples, the film demonstrates how voluntary organisations are vital to communities, often stepping in where support is needed most.

What if the support you rely on every day suddenly disappeared?

'Because We Weren’t There...' shines a light on the incredible work of voluntary organisations in Merthyr Tydfil, Wales - voiced by service users, volunteers and the sector employees themselves. From tackling loneliness and isolation to supporting the most vulnerable, volunteers and their organisations are vital to our communities.

This film was developed with Merthyr Tydfil's Third Sector Leaders' Forum, a group facilitated by Voluntary Action Merthyr Tydfil, and highlights the important role that voluntary organisations play in supporting local people and strengthening communities across Merthyr Tydfil, Wales. It was produced by Merthyr Valleys Homes on behalf of the sector.

It’s not too late to nominate!

The Welsh Charity Awards 2026, organised by WCVA CGGC, recognise and celebrate the fantastic contribution charities, community groups, not-for-profits and volunteers make to Wales by highlighting and championing the positive difference we can make to each other’s lives.

Take part in the to shout about your favourite voluntary organisation or volunteer and give them the chance of getting some well-earned recognition and a night to remember! Make a nomination for:

• Champion of diversity
• Fundraiser of the year
• Health and wellbeing
• Most influential small organisation
• Organisation of the year
• Use of Welsh language
• Volunteer of the year (aged 26 or over)
• Volunteer of the year (25 or under)
• Graham Benfield Outstanding Achievement Award (new category for 2026)

📣 For the attention of FLVC Members 📣

In partnership with Groundwork North Wales, we are offering FREE Safeguarding Group B training to all full members of FLVC.

🗓 Friday, July 17 2026
⏰ 9:30 AM – 2:30 PM
📍 Deeside Leisure Centre

Safeguarding is about protecting children and adults from abuse or neglect and educating those around them to recognise the signs and dangers.

This essential training will help equip you with the skills and knowledge required to fulfil your safeguarding responsibilities.

Group B practitioners are those who spend time with people in a group setting or on a one-to-one basis.

They will have a particular responsibility in relation to the people they work with and will need a higher level of knowledge than those in group A because of their direct involvement with people. The people they work with may or may not have safeguarding concerns.

Do you want to know if there is help or support available in the local community for you?

We are a free, confidential service that can help you to access support, for example, with:

• Meeting new people
• Financial, food or housing worries
• Mental wellbeing
• Connecting with the community
• Anything else that you would like information and/or advice with

Running every other Tuesday from 10am - 12pm.
