What happens if you don’t eat your greens?

My rosemary plant has given us a beautiful display of pretty lilac flowers, and now I get to collect the seeds 🥳

I’ve been checking the flowers regularly to look out for seed ripeness. Today, there were a few brown seeds tucked inside the flower heads, so I’m going to start harvesting them now, before they all fall off the plant.

These seeds are quite tiny, so picking the seed heads one by one isn’t the most time efficient option. This is my low hassle collection technique for fiddly seeds:

Holding a tray or collection tub under the branch where the flower head/seeds are hiding, I just gently rub the branch so that anything that’s loose/ready to fall off drops onto my tray/tub. This can be repeated every few days as seeds continue to ripen if you want to increase the yield.

As these seeds are so tiny and mixed with a selection of leaves, twigs, flowers and bugs, I’m not going to bother trying to separate them. My plan is to leave the whole lot somewhere dry and warm so that a) all the bugs that fell in the tray can escape b) plant debris dries up c) seed shells will harden.

I’ll probably then plant these up then share the seedlings once they are big enough

nudge nudge everyone. This is not my site but yours to share away.

Too many carrot seeds in the packet, swap them for someone’s leftover parsnip seeds. Got a glut of seedlings and no space left to plant them? pop a note on here and share away. Ran out of pots? make a request!

Stay safe and get growing!

Hands up, who else got a bit excited with the sunshine this weekend and headed out to the potting shed? 🙋🏻‍♀️

Anyone else have windowsills full of seedlings instead of ornaments all through the spring?

Remember to post any leftover or excess seeds or seedlings so we can get swapping and sharing! 🥳

I think most people have heard that certain vegetable scraps can be put in water and re-grown, but why wait until they are scraps?

I pop suitable veggies in water so that they stay fresh for longer and even keep growing as I use them.

The Brussels sprouts stalk was bought over 7 weeks ago and has since developed roots. Peel back the top layers of the sprout leaves and they are still fresh and green, and even more impressive, where I have picked off sprouts, I now have new buds growing!

The garlic started sprouting in the fridge, so I popped them in some water and am now using the scapes (leaves) in my cooking instead.

The leeks have both been cut back a few times, and keep growing- look at those roots!

In my fridge, I keep certain root vegetables, such as carrots, parsnips and even ginger, in closed containers with just a tiny bit of water (I take them out and rinse them about once a week). As these usually live in the cool, dark and damp soil, this provides perfect conditions to keep them fresh for ages and stops those bendy carrots! The parsnips (again, over 7 weeks old 🙈) have started rooting, but are still firm, fresh and just need a peel.

Broccoli, being the flowering part of the plant, doesn’t keep as long as the other vegetables shown, but by keeping it in some water in the fridge, I can massively extend it’s freshness.

My celery goes straight in some water and prefers the sunlight on the windowsill. I’ll eat the outer stalks first as it grows new inner stalks. No more limp celery in our house!

What other tips and tricks so you have to extend the life of your fruits and veg?
