Wandle Industrial Museum

The museum was founded in 1983. Its mission is to preserve, store, and interpret the heritage and history of the industries and people of the River Wandle.

Wednesday Archive Day. It is January 1987 and at that time the Wandle Industrial Museum were at Hartfield Crescent, Wimbledon. Supported by the Manpower Services Commission. Project to get people into work those who worked at the museum before finding employment produced the Threads Exhibition that opened that month.

Monday Art Day. This watercolour is by Vic Hine and shows the Huguenot Burial Ground on East Hill, Wandsworth. Following the revoking of the Edict of Nantes in 1685 by Louis XIV many Huguenots found their way to England including along the Wandle Valley. They brought with them their skills in dyeing, weaving, textile printing and other trades.

Friday Pub Day. The Thatched House pub can be found in Hammersmith. There is however no record of it ever being covered in thatch. The pub has links to former Fulham player and manager Bedford Jezzard who was a licensee at one time.

Thursday Postcard Day. This stained glass window designed by Edward Burne-Jones and made by Morris & Co at Merton Abbey shows Sir Galahad seeking out the Sangreal in his search for the Holy Grail.

Wednesday Archive Day. This picture was taken at the Liberty Print Works (now Merton Abbey Mills) taken in July 1963 of Tom Gibbons, who was a Screen Printer and Screen Maker for the company. Tom started life as an apprentice. Are you related to Tom? Please let us know.

Tuesday Quiz Day. This shows a mill on the River Wandle. What is the name of this mill and where was it?
The answer to last week's question on when Liberty took over the site now known as Merton Abbey Mills was 1904.

The walk as part of Wandsworth Heritage Festival on the 12 June is now full. The walk from Earlsfield Station to the mouth of Wandle will be repeated on Friday 19th June. Follow the Wandle and learn about the industrial past of Wandsworth from mills to railways.

Friday Pub Day. This is the Gorringe Park Hotel, Tooting which changed to the Roohin Lounge in March 2025. It has since closed and its future is uncertain. The pub, as it was, was built in the 1870's.

Thursday Postcard Day. This postcard show a Honeysuckle pattern printed on linen fabric dated 1876 designed by William Morris. There is some debate over a Honeysuckle as his daughter May later designed another Honeysuckle pattern used for wallpaper.
