This Sony is finally ready to go home, it's taken up a lot of my time over the last few weeks so I'm glad to see the back of it. There were a couple of problems, the tape decks needed a lot of work to clean up the remains of the drive belts and remove the goo from the pulleys, then the idler gears were split, very common on these decks, so they got replaced, all the leaf switches on both decks were showing high resistance across their contacts, so they were stripped and cleaned, that should have been it but the two reel drive belts I obtained from an official supplier had the wrong cross section and I had to order some of a more suitable size, finally the decks were done. Now I had a problem with dc reaching the speaker outlets and tripping the protection circuit, it could only be coming from the STK output module so that got replaced and it's now sounding ok and no longer going into protection mode. Thankfully all the cd player needed was a service. This hifi had some sentimental value to it's owner so it was nice to get it going for them despite the many hours I spent on it.

Finally ready for a new home, this was sitting under my bench for a couple of years waiting for me to find time to sort it out. The turntable needed a service and a new belt, the radio worked fine, the tape deck seemed unrepairable at first but I found a way around the problem and it now works well. All in all a really nice retro music centre.

So back to the Sharp music centre, everything now works, including the tape deck that I thought I would have to give up on. The take up reel takes it's drive from the capstan spindle via an idler wheel, on the capstan spindle was a rubber sleeve that had melted and was no longer available as a spare part. I scratched my head for a while and then found some thick rubber sleeving with the perfect inside and outside diameter, not easy to fit but I now have drive to the supply reel. It all needs lengthy testing but it's looking good for this nice old system.

I had this lovely old Rogers speaker brought in with an open circuit voice coil on the bass / midrange driver. I can't really take credit for this one as I sent the driver off to a specialist company for repair. Before doing that I had looked around for a replacement driver only to discover they were going for nearly £500, and as you can't chuck any old driver in one of these, repair was the (much) cheaper option!

This Sony came in with tape deck problems, it was no wonder as all the drive belts had turned to liquid rubber, not easy...

This Sony came in with tape deck problems, it was no wonder as all the drive belts had turned to liquid rubber, not easy to clean up as it gets everywhere, plenty of alcohol, kitchen roll and dozens of cotton buds later it’s almost ready for the new belts, but not before I replace the two drive gears on the take-up idlers, both are split and so don’t sit tight on the motor shaft, I had one in stock but have had to order the other, now put to one side while I get on with something else.

I've seen a lot of Yamaha gear over the years but never one this old, made sometime in the 1970's. It's come in with a loud mains hum and inoperative tape deck. I look forward to sorting this one out.
