t us

Milton Keynes Hospital occupies a 60-hectare site to the south of the city centre. We are a medium sized district general hospital, serving Milton Keynes and surrounding areas. The hospital has approximately 400 inpatient beds, and provides a broad range of general medical and surgical services. We have a busy A&E Department that manages all medical, surgical and child health emergency admissions. In addition to providing general acute services, Milton Keynes Hospital increasingly provides more specialist services, including cancer care, cardiology and oral surgery. We have responsibility for treating premature babies born locally. Some of the babies we treat are born as early as 24 weeks old (16 weeks early), and weigh as little as 500 grams. Some quick facts:

we have beds for 400 patients
70,000 people come to Accident and Emergency every year
we treat 20,000 elective patients, 200,000 outpatients, and deliver over 4,000 babies every year.

When patients are well enough to leave the hospital, their discharge can sometimes be delayed if the right arrangements aren’t in place at home.
If you’re a relative or carer of a patient who is ready to leave hospital, you can help our discharge team by preparing for a return home:

✅Arrange transport
✅Collect any prescribed medication
✅Ensure someone is there to welcome them back
✅Stock up on food, fluids, and essentials
✅Bring clothes for travelling home
✅Provide key access if no one can be at home
✅Your support makes a big difference to your loved one and helps us free up beds for patients who urgently need hospital care.

Charging up for a greener future!

We have now completed the installation of new electric vehicle fast chargers thanks to funding from the NHS Electric Vehicle Charging Programme (EVCP).

To mark the milestone, we were joined by South Central Ambulance Service colleagues Lauren Caiger and Rhys Cook with their prototype electric ambulance - an exciting glimpse into the future for emergency response vehicles.

The hospital's new charging infrastructure will support future EV ambulance field trials and help the NHS meet its ambition of no longer purchasing new internal combustion engine ambulances after 2030.

We are really pleased to be one of the organisations working together to support the NHS net zero journey.

📅 If you're invited for diabetic eye screening, please attend your appointment - just like our city's Mayor, Councillor Paul Trendall who had his annual diabetic eye screening appointment at the hospital last week.

As someone who lives with diabetes, Mr Mayor knows how important it is to attend regular screening appointments and he is encouraging others across Milton Keynes to do the same.

He described his experience of eye screening as "easy, important and painless - the eye drops can sting a little, but it’s not something I'd describe as painful".

👶🏿💙A special first for our Transitional Care service!

Baby boys Jesse, Jordan and Jerome are the first triplets born at MKUH to be cared for through our Transitional Care service and without needing admission to our neonatal unit. This meant that the beautiful newborns were able to remain with their mum throughout their entire hospital stay. The milestone comes as Transitional Care marks a successful first year at MKUH.

The family's journey began antenatally with mum and dad, Jacqueline and Philip, being cared for by expert teams to plan their babies’ care. This included personalised tours, discussions about care pathways and access to helpful resources to prepare them for the arrival of their babies.

Supported by our specialist neonatal and maternity teams, Jacqueline and Philip welcomed their boys at 35 weeks, weighing 2.140 kg, 2.300 kg and 2.370 kg.

The triplets received specialist feeding support and our team created a special space to keep them close to their parents whilst in hospital.

Jacqueline said: “I’m so grateful for all the support I received, and I have profound gratitude for my midwife, Lisa, and the medical teams who were there for me.”

Congratulations to Jacqueline, Philip on the arrival of their three beautiful boys, and thank you to everyone across our maternity, neonatal and transitional care teams who helped make this possible.
