Incredible shot of Buachaille Etive Mòr and the famous local stag.

Glencoe’s wildlife can be as spectacular as its mountains. No matter what time of year you visit, and whether deep in the glen or high on the moor , take a while to stop and look, and you’ll be amazed by what you see.

Moody skies along the West Highland Way captured perfectly.

“It was tough but we did it!
The weather was very challenging, especially because we slept outside most of the time, But it was totally worth it. What an adventure!”

Some usual tips for walking WHW.

“Finished this on Friday. Loved it! It was challenging as did it over 6 days which includes 2 relentlessly hard 20 odd mile days over some difficult terrain. Totally worth it for the amazing landscape and it was dry pretty much the whole time, Scotland is beautiful.

Top tips would be - make sure you have a good pair of boots that are not tight with a thick pair of woolen socks under it (never cotton and always quick wicking), always change socks halfway through the day, walking poles are a godsend, quick wicking t shirts and cut off quick wicking trousers (it's can get warm on the inclines), water bladder instead of bottles, a good medium backpack (no more than 30ltrs required for a day pack if you have luggage transfer, do not take more than u need), always have food and take the stops where you can. Set off early enough on the long days as the terrain can be slow (particularly on the Rowardennan-Crianlarich stretch) and do not underestimate how much walking consecutive days can have on your energy levels (or how hard the devil's staircase is esp after 15 miles). The weather can change fast between Bridge of orchy and fort william in the mountains and moors so layers are the way to go. Always check for tics (they seemed to love my hair). Good luck fellow travellers”

Check out this detailed description of the WHW.

Day 1

Any walk that includes a detour for whiskey
is a good day in my book. Milngavie - Drymen with detours to Glengoyne distillery and the Devils pulpit- 12 mile day turned to 19. Ending the day at one of the oldest pubs in Scotland.

Day 2

Drymen to Rowardennan youth hostel- 16 miles. Started off beautiful with great views climbing Conic hill and surprise hairy coos at the top. Coming out of the next town, weather turned and we got poured on with thunderstorms to boot.

Day 3

Rowardennan youth hostel to Ardlui. Left the hostel and after a couple miles the trail split to a low route option or a high route. Low route was along the water and supposed to be more scenic, but also more technical rocky walking. A little rocky in sections but way better than expectations. Made it to Inversnaid which was the next town, but decided to carry on to Ardleish as we were going to catch a ferry across Loch Lomond. The trail soon turned though into very rocky boulders that slowed us down and we
took 2 hrs to only go 3 miles. Made a push to catch the ferry, making it by about 5 minutes otherwise we would have had to wait an hour. Super cute cabin that we had in Ardlui where we spent the night before catching ferry back to the trail the next morning.

Day 4

Ardlui to Tyndrum. Took ferry back across to
rejoin trail where we had left it. Climbed steadily up to the highlands and had some great views from the top. Continued on towards Tyndrum walking along the river in places. 14.2 miles for the day.

Day 5

Proof that the sun does exist in Scotland. Tyndrum to Bridge of Orchy.

Day 6

day 6 took us from Bridge of Orchy to Kingshouse- 12 miles today.

Day 7

Up, up, and away we went over the Devils Staircase from Kingshouse to Kinlochleven.

Day 8

The end of the west highland way- 8 days,
96 miles. Kinlochleven to Fort William.

“Last Wednesday we finished a 9-day version of the WHW. We had a fantastic time and enjoyed it very much! I guess this wasn't the first and last time. We also loved the little flowers and plants who all together made the beautiful colors of the mountains ❤️❤️❤️
With an empty head and a full heart we return to The Netherlands 🥰”

Hiking the West Highland way

“Had the most incredible and memorable time hiking the trail in 6 days, couldn’t have asked for better weather either! Camped in some breathtaking places aswell as meeting some genuinely beautiful humans! Just had the emotional train journey back to Glasgow from Fort William and the blues have already hit! Hope everyone else who is yet to finish the trail has a sensational time ❤️”
