In the event of an emergency ALWAYS call 999. Our Statutory Duties

The responsibilities and duties of the fire and rescue services in England and Wales are principally governed by the Fire and Rescue Services Act 2004. This Act requires all fire authorities to make provision for fire fighting purposes, which not only means putting out fires but also includes protecting life and property from fir

e. It also makes provision for attending road traffic collisions and other emergencies as well as providing a statutory footing for undertaking community safety activities. Additionally, the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 requires all fire authorities to enforce fire safety standards in a variety of commercial premises such as offices, shops, schools, factories, hospitals etc. Responsibility for the three fire and rescue services in Wales was devolved to the Welsh Government in 2004. In accordance with the transfer of responsibilities the Welsh Government regulary produces a National Framework which sets out priorities and objectives for fire and rescue in Wales. In accordance with these framework documents each fire and rescue service must then produce a risk reduction plan. Risk Reduction Plans focus on community and corporate risks in a holistic way and are a blueprint for how the services then manage risk within their respective area. A key objectives of the Risk Reduction Plans is to link to the Government's commitment to reduce deaths and injuries resulting from fire and road traffic collisions.

On the 8th April Dragon LNG, Waterston and the crews of Milford Haven fire station (Whole time and Oncall) carried out a joint training exercise in the workshop/warehouse area of their site.

Something a little different for both organisations as our normal joint training is based around their liquefied natural gas (LNG) process area's.

The scenario the crews were faced with was:
A fire in the workshop and three persons unaccounted for.

Upon arrival the first crew were greeted by a member of Dragons staff who passed over relevant information to the initial officer in charge (OIC) for the fire service. Once this was carried out crews got quickly to work in setting up the fire ground equipment, whilst breathing apparatus (BA) teams got ready to enter the building.

It was a challenging exercise in terms of communications between the site responsible person and OIC, for the OIC to then pass the information to the BA teams to ensure a safe passage for the BA teams and the rescue of casualties.

New procedures were practiced such as: the use of a smoke curtain at entry points, which allows fire crews to control the amount of air entering the building.

A BA emergency was implemented to replicate a BA wearer in distress. This was to reinforce set procedures to ensure the safety of our crews.

Both organisations picked up valuable learning points going forward.

Thank you to all the staff at Dragon for allowing us to use your facilities.

The last shout of 2025?

Today 32P2 and the On-Call crew at Milford Haven were called out as first responders to assist our colleagues in Welsh Ambulance Services University NHS Trust and the Wales Air Ambulance Charity.

Looking back at the year this was call number 297 for the retained crew. We averaged 24 calls each month with July and August being the busiest at 36 and 38.

We thank all our firefighters here at Milford Haven and throughout Gwasanaeth Tân ac Achub CGC / MAWW Fire and Rescue for their commitment and dedication to their service areas.

Wishing everyone a healthy and happy new year!
