It’s International Dawn Chorus Day 🎶🌤️ Turn the sound up 🔉 and hear the chorus as it sweeps over Woolbeding Gardens.
The chorus can be heard loudest around 30 minutes before sunrise. The audio you hear in our reel was recorded at 5.10am on 26th April 2026. Cool, still morning air allows sound to carry further and clearer, making bird calls more effective with less energy. What birds can you hear in our reel?

This World Poetry Day, we are celebrating Charlotte Turner Smith, 18th century poet and novelist who resided at Woolbeding House between 1785 and 1787. Inspired by her surroundings, Smith featured nature and botany in many of her writings, including in ‘Sonnet II Written at the Close of Spring’ which reflects on the passing beauty of spring:
 .
The garlands fade that Spring so lately wove,
Each simple flower, which she had nurs’d in dew,
Anemonies that spangled every grove,
The primrose wan, and hare-bell, mildly blue.
No more shall violets linger in the dell,
Or purple orchis variegate the plain,
Till Spring again shall call forth every bell,
And dress with humid hands, her wreaths again.
Signs of spring are appearing everywhere in garden, with the first tulips appearing throughout the borders, and daffodils spreading around the follies. Swipe ➡️ to view.

The team are taking advantage of the glorious sunshine and are preparing the lawns ready for Spring opening 🌸 We start by scarifying the lawns to get rid of the winter moss, which helps make the grass stronger to cope with the heat of the summer. It takes 6 days for one person to scarify all the lawns of the Formal Garden. Afterwards, the team will aerate to improve drainage and top dress areas if necessary.

2 - Camellia ‘Show Girl’

The carpet of crocuses around the London Plane are looking stunning in the February sunshine ☀️ A welcome gap in the rain clouds! The crocuses now self seed every year; originally, the seed was scattered by Stewart Grimshaw and Simon Sainsbury a few decades previously.

Our roses growing against Woolbeding House are getting their seasonal tidy-up! 🌹
Of the nine roses growing around the house, Rosa banksiae ‘Lutea’ or Lady Banks’ Rose is the largest and is an evergreen thornless rambler that produces small double yellow flowers in spring or early summer. While it can be pruned immediately after flowering, due to the team being busy in the garden during summer, now is the time for us to remove older woody stems and tie in the fresh new growth along the south-facing wall.

From 2nd March, we’ll be making some essential repairs to the office building at Woolbeding Gardens. This work will protect the Grade II listed building and make sure it continues to be safe for staff, volunteers and the public. We’re expecting to be finished by early June.

While we’re carrying out the repairs, we’ll need to close a short section of Woolbeding Lane that runs south from the junction of Brambling Lane and Hollist Lane alongside the building.

Vehicles won’t be able to use the closed section of road but they’ll still be able to enter the south end of Woolbeding Lane for access, including to All Hallows Church, and there will be a path running the full length of the lane for walkers and cyclists.

You’ll be able to visit Woolbeding Gardens as usual during the work – we reopen for spring and summer on 23rd April, Thursdays and Fridays, and look forward to seeing you then.
