Break time can look like freedom from the outside, but for many autistic students it can feel like the most demanding part of the day. In the latest episode of the Middletown Podcast, we're joined by Jenny Gibson, a researcher at the University of Cambridge, to get specific about why play matters and what schools can do to make playtime and lunch time genuinely inclusive.

One of our team members, Evangelene, shared some of the work she’s been doing to support a student to understand and balance their energy:

“Over the past couple of weeks this young person has been learning all about The Spoon Theory and how it relates to their energy levels. By thinking about “energy igniters” and “energy zappers,” they’ve started to recognise what brings them joy—and what can feel overwhelming. Using physical spoons, they mapped out a typical school day, deciding which “drawers” their spoons belong in at different times. They are now trying to add more energy igniters into their routine to help them manage their energy more effectively and prevent burnout.”

Two of our team members, Deborah McNabney and Evangelene Haffey developed a horticulture club in one of the schools that they’ve been supporting. This resource shares some of the plants that they've used to create a sensory garden. It also shares ideas for step-by-step visual guides that give green fingered students a chance to take charge of plant care.
