Our officers were proud to support the act of remembrance today at various events across the force area.

In particular we remember the special constables who made the ultimate sacrifice from Cleveland during the second world war.

SC Richard Francis Hindmarch Died 10th August 1940 aged 53 during an air raid at the iron works in Loftus.
SC Hubert Whitworth Adams aged 63 and SC Edwin Henry Brooks aged 46 both died whilst on patrol in an air raid in Grangetown.
SC Joseph Roebuck aged 43 and SC William John Smallwood aged 50 both died during an air raid at Redcar.

“They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old:
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them.”

A man is due in court later this month 👇🏻

Around 9:30pm on Friday 31st January, members of Cleveland Special Constabulary Matrix Team were on patrol when they spotted a stationary Mazda MX5 with smoke coming from the engine near Wynyard.

After making sure the occupants and vehicle were safe, checks showed that the Mazda was reportedly uninsured and had no tax, and the driver was reportedly failing to comply with provisional licence conditions.

A 20-year-old man from the Durham area was arrested and later charged with driving a motor vehicle otherwise than in accordance with a licence and no insurance. He will appear at Teesside Magistrates Court on Monday 24th February.

Special Constables from across the Cleveland Police area paid their respects this morning, laying wreaths at various locations.

The Special Constabulary played a vital role in the 2 world wars, by providing volunteers to maintain law and order and to protect citizens, a role we still undertake to this day.

Training is being carried out to equip Special Constables in Cleveland with public order skills and the use of Taser.

A number of Special Constables, who volunteer their time as warranted officers, have already been trained in public order and further training will be scheduled.

Public order training looks to equip officers with the knowledge and skills to deal with incidents where there may be spontaneous violence, and to deal with those situations where there is a risk of public disorder with the potential to cause disruption and harm.

Special Constables are often deployed in situations where these risks could be present; such as at football matches, demonstrations or other large-scale events.

Taser is used by officers who have had specialised training and it is an effective way of dealing with many dangerous situations, by incapacitating a potentially violent person who poses a danger to themselves or others. A decision to use a Taser is never taken lightly and other options are always considered.

🗣️ Cleveland Police Superintendent Emily Harrison, lead for Citizens in Policing, said: “Special Constables are valued members of the Cleveland Police family and we need to build on their training and skills like we do with all officers, so that they are fully equipped to do the role they volunteer their time to.

“Any one of our officers can be deployed to a dangerous incident where these skills need to be drawn on, and they need to be provided with the knowledge and resources to deal with these situations in the best way possible, both to protect themselves and to protect our communities.”

🔵 Recruitment is currently open for people to join Cleveland Special Constabulary, including transferees from other forces. To find out more and to apply, please read more here 👇🏻

Our officers went to Hartburn Primary School on Friday to show the kids the police vehicles and equipment. It was great that one of our officers was able to do this as he was a former pupil of the school.

We hope the kids had a great time!

Our Special Constabulary will also be assisting with this campaign, which takes place throughout July 👇🏻

Throughout July, officers from Cleveland Police will be joining forces around the country in a national campaign to target the ‘fatal four’; the four main causes of fatal and serious collisions.

Operation Spotlight in Cleveland will pay particular attention to those driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

July typically see’s the highest number of fatal and serious collisions, when compared to other months of the year; the biggest factors being: driving under the influence of drink or drugs, mobile phone use, speeding and not wearing a seatbelt.

Nationally, there have been 2,751 people killed or seriously injured on roads in July in the last five years as a result of the ‘fatal four’.

Matrix Team officers will be working to educate people on the risks of the ‘fatal four’, aiming to change mindsets so that these offences become socially unacceptable, and wherever necessary will carry out enforcement.

In Cleveland so far in 2024, around 6️⃣7️⃣0️⃣ people have been arrested on suspicion of being in charge of a vehicle or driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

🗣️ Roads Policing Inspector Stephen Clyburn, from Cleveland Police Matrix Team, said: “We would like to urge people to think thoroughly about their actions and heed our warnings; the statistics are shockingly clear and show that the behaviours of some are taking thousands of lives every year and seriously injuring many more.

“July is a month which typically see’s some of the highest numbers of ‘fatal four’ collisions. Our officers will be out in force to patrol our road network and educate road users as well as carrying out enforcement action wherever necessary.

“We hope that people take seriously their responsibilities as a road user; everyone has a part to play in making our roads safer, choosing to make good decisions and encouraging our friends and family to do the same.”
