A litter-bug and a suspected fly-tipper from Hemlington have been hit with court fines as part of an ongoing crackdown in Middlesbrough.

In November last year, Middlesbrough Council’s Fly-tipping Squad was called in to remove three black bags of household waste from near the subway on Aviemore Road, Hemlington.

The following March a further 11 bags of household waste were dumped at the same location, with the same culprit identified.

Further failures to attend formal interviews led to the case being heard at Teesside Magistrates’ Court last month.

A separate case in July heard how bags containing household waste, a broken door and a duvet had been dumped by a different person.

A new electric street cleaning machine is being trialled in Middlesbrough as part of work to improve cleanliness across the town.

The Glutton H₂O Perfect combines a powerful vacuum with a water jet, allowing it to collect litter while tackling dirt, stains, chewing gum and other debris.

It operates quietly, while its design aims to reduce the physical strain on street cleaning teams.

Over the coming months, the machine will be tested across the town centre and key shopping areas.

The trial will help the Council assess how effective the technology is and whether investing in additional machines could improve street cleaning in Middlesbrough.

A creative legacy continues to be built at an East Middlesbrough park which has undergone renovation in recent months.

Chris and Aisha from Story & Studio CIC helped young people in Brambles Farm paint the latest mural at Spider Park on Colmore Avenue.

Thanks to funding from the council, the artists worked children and staff from Youth Focus North East to create a design inspired by the theme "Our Community".

Looking to design something different to other murals in the park, youngsters created the design from typeface, text and shapes instead of imagery.

☀️ Even more summer fun across Middlesbrough ☀️

We've brought you updates about our Fun Days this summer, bringing families and communities together to enjoy free activities, entertainment and a chance to connect with local services.

The kids might be heading back to school this week, but the memories of community events in North Ormesby, Trimdon, Stainton and Easterside will live long in the memory.

As you can see in these pictures, hundreds of residents have enjoyed a massive host of activities - climbing walls, inflatables, Punch and Judy shows, crafts, games, music and teddy bear picnics.

The events are a chance for neighbours to come together and find out more about the support available in their community.

A huge thank you to all the volunteers, community groups, partners and our neighbourhood teams in the east, west, north and south of Middlesbrough who have worked so hard to make these events happen.

Middlesbrough Mayor Chris Cooke and his Executive last night approved plans that would see exciting changes to the town centre.

A new strategy developed with major businesses and organisations prioritises the needs and ambitions of younger generations.

The strategy is designed to support and grow Middlesbrough’s economy and benefit everyone living in the town.

It focuses on issues including new homes, creating a safe and welcoming environment and ensuring more young people can build successful careers in Middlesbrough.

A new 10-year Investment Prospectus was also approved at the town hall last night.

It includes aspirations for the biggest changes to our town centre “for a generation” and would see exciting venues built and new open spaces developed for visitors to enjoy.

A brand-new theatre features in the plans - which you can see in the CGI below - alongside a hotel development and fresh approaches to bring big name shopping brands to town.

The new theatre would be built on the Civic Centre site and complement the town hall, MIMA, Central Library and hospitality businesses based around Centre Square.

And in a move inspired by successful regeneration projects around Europe, empty buildings without development potential would be removed and the land transformed into attractive urban spaces.

Mayor Cooke praised the work of a new Place Leaders Partnership and stressed having the support of key employers and big institutions including Teesside University was hugely important.

He said: “This is about the town, it’s about people and it’s about progress. I’m over the moon.”

Thousands of new homes would be built in Middlehaven and Gresham, bringing families and young professionals into the town centre.

Mayor Cooke said the future development of Middlehaven was “absolutely essential”.

“We’re the closest we’ve ever been and we have to make sure we get it over the line,” he said.

The Council is working with renowned developer Capital & Centric on the plans for a new community where people could live, learn, work and play all within walking distance.

Cllr Theo Furness, Executive member for Economic Development, described the wider new vision as “truly game-changing.”

“We very much do have a can-do attitude here,” he said. “These are credible plans and we will see spades in the ground within the next 12 months.”

Our food waste collections are continuing today - but you might notice a difference in one part of Middlesbrough.

Due to vehicle availability, a general refuse truck will be carrying out collections instead of the usual food waste vehicle. It will be taken to the usual facility to be recycled.

This makes sure food caddies in Marton Manor, parts of Gunnergate Lane and the new estate at Buckthorn Grove off Ladgate Lane are emptied on time.

Know your numbers! The UK's national blood pressure awareness week encourages people to better understand their health.

To support the campaign, our neighbourhood teams will be hosting free drop-in blood pressure checks at venues across Middlesbrough.

The check only takes a few minutes - you'll receive your results straight away - and the team can offer advice or signpost you to further support if needed.

There's still time for people in East Middlesbrough to apply to help influence how £40m of funding is spent in their area.

The government has chosen Park End and Thorntree to each receive £20m of investment over the next decade as part of the Pride in Place agenda.

MFC Foundation Chief Executive Charlotte Dinsdale and community leader Gary Hamilton have been appointed to oversee the regeneration project.

The funding can be spent on issues including housing, education, employment, health and wellbeing, transport and safety.

To help to develop plans, 12 local board members will now be recruited - six for each area - to help lead the plans.
