Local government unions have rejected the 2026 pay offer and are demanding meaningful pay negotiations in a letter to employers signed by all three unions - UNISON, Unite and GMB.

Mileage rate rise from HMRC is a win for workers — won by our members.

“UNISON has campaigned hard for this long overdue change,” Andrea Egan, UNISON general secretary

“Workers who use their own cars to do their job have been left thousands of pounds out of pocket for far too many years”.

“This simple measure will provide immediate help for countless frontline workers in public services. Particularly at a time when living costs are going through the roof again.”

“There’s still more to do to ensure no one is losing out and the union will continue to campaign for more over the coming months.”

Loving your job and being in a union? ABSOLUTELY COMPATIBLE. ✅️

There's a myth worth busting:
● that trade unions are about conflict;
● that members must resent their employers; OR
● that joining UNISON means you think your workplace is the enemy.

It isn't true.

👍 Most of our members are proud of the work they do.
👍 They care about the people they serve and the colleagues they work alongside. We do too.

What UNISON is actually about is making sure that dedication is recognised:
✅️ Fair pay.
✅️ Safe conditions.
✅️ Proper procedures when things go wrong.
✅️ A voice at the table when decisions are made that affect your working life.

It is deeply concerning that the schools white paper suggests every state school should join an academy trust.

Academisation has led to variable transparency, weak local accountability and decision making processes that are often remote from parents, staff and communities. The proposals in the white paper risks reinforcing and exacerbating the very problems that the government itself has identified.

UNISON, NASUWT, NEU, AEP (Association of Educational Psychologists), GMB, Unite and Community have published a joint-statement on the plans for every state school to join an academy trust.
