UK Youth Parliament Middlesbrough

UK Youth Parliament Middlesbrough Ben Carr is the current Member of Youth Parliament (MYP) for Middlesbrough. He represents every 11-18 year old in the town.

Run by young people, the UK Youth Parliament provides opportunities for 11-18 year-olds to use their voice in creative ways to bring about social change.

Sorry for the long period of inactivity, I've had medical issues etc which have taken up most of my attention. I got back yesterday from the House of Commons, where the uk youth parliament had their annual debate in the chamber. After a lot of discussion and many great speeches and points made, regarding the most voted issues in the recent make your mark ballot, it was decided that the UK wide campaign would be to get 'A curriculum for life' taught in schools through PSHE and that the national campaign would be for votes for 16 and 17 year olds in all public elections. This is already something that has been achieved in Scotland and 16 and 17 year olds played a major part in the way Scotland voted in the EU referendum, which was majority remain for that area of the uk. I'd like to know your opinion on these campaigns, were you happy with the result? Any further ideas for local campaigns, or just something you would like to see change in Middlesbrough. Get in contact either through the comments section of this post, or email me at [email protected] Over this year, I will be furthering my work on achieving my goals that I was elected upon. These include things like subsidised fees on public transport for young people, more inclusion of technology into lessons and setting up a youth council in Middlesbrough. Thanks, your local Myp,
Ben Carr

Tomorrow, I will represent Middlesbrough at the House of Commons, in the annual Youth Parliament sitting. It is an honour to represent my town on such a big stage.

This week , on Friday the 14th, MYP's from across the country will meet for the annual House of Commons sitting. The sitting will be broadcast live on BBC democracy, and later shown on BBC Parliament.

The 5 top issues that will be debated in the House are as followed:
1. Votes at 16: Give 16 and 17 year olds the right to vote in elections and referendums.

2. Everyone should be paid at least the Living Wage of £7.65 per hour (£8.80 in London). Anyone who works, regardless of age, should have a decent standard of living.

3. Mental health services should be improved with our help. We should all learn about common mental health issues at school and negative stereotypes should be challenged.

4. Work Experience. We should have the chance to do at least a week's placement, at a place of our choosing. We should have access to professionals who inspire us.

5. Bring back exam resits in Maths and English in English schools, and help us achieve our potential.

Had problems with the page recently so haven't been able to post an update in a while. Been very busy over the last few months, so expect to hear something soon.

Earlier today I met with Andy McDonald MP for Middlesbrough. We covered a wide range of issues, and spoke about how we can work together.

It is clear that Andy is very passionate and proud of Middlesbrough, and is fighting for a brighter future. I look forward to working with Andy.

Excellent weekend with UKYP in Lancaster representing Middlesbrough. Met a lot of new people, all of which had common interests in one way or another.

It is clear to me that there is a lot of work to be done, with Make Your Mark, Youth Council, and generally building bonds with the wider community.

That all starts tomorrow, a full diary this week. Hoping it's a good one.

Tomorrow I'll be travelling down to Lancaster for my first national event representing Middlesbrough, the UKYP annual sitting.

I will be tweeting updates as often as I can on my twitter page

With the school year now over, I've turned my attention to my manifesto launch.

Having reviewed my policies, I've noticed things that can be modified and certain things to be added.

I'm hoping to make a big event out of it. I'll post any more news on this as soon as I can.

Diary is starting to fill up now, it's clear that there is a lot of work to be done on my part.

I'm hoping that the next few months will be as productive as they are busy, and that I can take steps forward to achieving my goals.

Your support is vital to this.
