💚 Did you know...

Nine Yards has been creating positive change for more than 30 years?

Nine Yards is a new name, but our story began way back in 1992, when we were established as Middlesbrough Environment City.

Originally focused on environmental sustainability and community action, our work has evolved alongside the communities we serve - from environmental projects to affordable food, warm homes, energy advice, active travel and community growing.

🍎💚 A big thank you to volunteers from Teesside University who joined us for an apple picking session earlier this week.

The team rolled up their sleeves to help harvest a great selection of apples - which will go on to support local communities through our network of Eco Shops. They also got hands-on with apple pressing, turning some of the freshly picked fruit into delicious juice! 🍏

It was a great opportunity to share more about our work, the importance of community growing and how looking after our orchard helps people and nature thrive.

A huge thank you to our friends at Apple A Day who hosted the session and to everyone who came along, got stuck in and gave their time to support our work. Your help makes a real difference, and we loved having you with us! 💚

Keep an eye on the Events page of our website for future events.

👋 We’re delighted to welcome Simon Baines to Nine Yards as our new Project Officer for Affordable Warmth (Community Outreach)!

Simon joins Kelly and Connor in our Affordable Warmth Team and will help people across our communities access the advice and support they need to feel warmer, save on energy bills and make their homes more comfortable. 💚

Working through our Eco Shop network and other local venues, Simon will work with residents and help them explore the support available and connect them with the right services.

We’re really pleased to have Simon on the team and look forward to the difference he’ll help us make. Welcome to Nine Yards, Simon! 👏

🤝 Working together to tackle food insecurity across the Tees Valley.

We were delighted to welcome Andrew Forsey OBE, National Director of Feeding Britain, to Nine Yards’ Eco Shops recently!

Feeding Britain brings together local charities, community groups, schools, councils and other organisations to improve access to affordable, nutritious food – while sharing knowledge and championing longer-term solutions to hunger and poverty.
During Andrew’s visit, we explored how our organisations could work together to make an even bigger difference for local people.

We visited two of our Eco Shops – run by Tees Valley Together in Hemlington and the Genesis Project in Grove Hill – and had brilliant conversations about the difference they make to local communities.

Andrew was really impressed by the work of our Eco Shop network, which helps people access good, affordable food while making sure surplus food reaches the people who can use it.

We're proud of what our Eco Shops are achieving across Middlesbrough and the wider Tees Valley. By sharing ideas, building partnerships and learning from each other, we can help more people access the food they need and support healthier, thriving communities. 💚

🌟 Celebrating the best of the Tees Valley – and the power of working together.

We were delighted to attend the first-ever Tees Business Showcase & Forum at Middlesbrough Football Club’s Riverside Stadium yesterday, joining businesses and organisations from across the region to share ideas, make connections and celebrate the talent, ambition and opportunities on our doorstep.

A real highlight was the keynote speech from Professor Mark Simpson, Teesside University’s new Vice-Chancellor and Chief Executive, who captured something important about our region: you cannot understand the Tees Valley without understanding both its challenges and its strengths.

He spoke about a growing confidence in the region, fuelled by cultural milestones such as the Turner Prize coming to MIMA and Middlesbrough and Stockton being shortlisted for City and Town of Culture.

But perhaps most importantly, he highlighted the power of partnerships, research and innovation in shaping our future – from cutting-edge clean energy developments and industrial decarbonisation to the circular economy, with universities and local businesses working together to turn ideas into action.

At Nine Yards, we know that creating a thriving Tees Valley takes collaboration. It means bringing people, communities, businesses and organisations together to tackle challenges, share knowledge and build a fairer, greener and more sustainable future.

Days like this are a great reminder of just how much expertise, creativity and ambition we have across our region – and what we can achieve when we work together.

Here's to building on that momentum, making new connections and going the whole Nine Yards for people, place and planet. 💚

🍎 Happy Apple Day! | 21 October 🍏

Did you know our community orchard at Nine Yards is home to 64 varieties of apples, alongside 12 varieties of pears and 14 varieties of plums? That’s a whole lot of fruit!

Apples have a rich history, are packed with goodness and come in an amazing range of shapes, sizes, colours and flavours. They’re also one of the easiest fruits to grow at home, whether you have an allotment or space for a tree in your garden.

Our orchard is cared for by the wonderful volunteers at Apple A Day, who help keep these trees thriving and bring people together through activities such as our apple-picking and pressing sessions. 🍎

From cooking and eating to pressing into juice and sharing the harvest through our Eco Shops, our orchard is all about growing local food, supporting wildlife and protecting these fantastic varieties for future generations.

Here’s to apples, community and growing a little goodness together! 🌳❤️

Everyone deserves the chance to thrive. 💚

Saturday 17 October is the United Nation's International Day for the Eradication of Poverty – a reminder that potverty is about more than money. It can affect access to nutritious food, a warm home, good health and opportunities for the future.

And behind the issue of poverty are people, families and communities – each with their own experiences, challenges and hopes for the future.

At Nine Yards, we work alongside people, communities and partners across the Tees Valley to tackle poverty and inequality in all its forms - and help create a brighter future for everyone.

🥕 Our Eco Shops help make affordable food accessible.

🏡 Our Affordable Warmth team helps people find support with energy costs and keeping their homes warm.

🌱 Our community growing, active travel, health and wellbeing projects help people build healthier, more sustainable lives.

But lasting change takes all of us. By working together, we can tackle the barriers people face and build thriving communities where everyone has the opportunity to flourish.

Because when communities come together, everyone has the chance to thrive.

Transformations are inevitable. Exclusion isn’t. 🌍

How do we build a future where everyone has the opportunity to thrive?

That’s the question at the heart of the United Nations 'World Social Report 2026: The New Economics of Social Inclusion – Making Transformations Work for All'.

Its message is clear: economic, digital and green progress won’t automatically benefit everyone. We need to invest in people, tackle inequality and make sure communities have the opportunities and support they need to flourish.

Here in the Tees Valley, that matters.

At Nine Yards, we work alongside people and communities to tackle poverty, improve health and wellbeing, support more sustainable living and create opportunities for positive change.

🥕 Our Eco Shops help make affordable food accessible.
🏡 Our Affordable Warmth team helps people manage energy costs and access support.
🌱 Our community growing and active travel projects help people live healthier, more sustainable lives.
🤝🏼 And our work is aligned with the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals - in particular Goal 3: Good Health and Well-being, Goal 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities and Goal 13: Climate Action.

These goals reflect our belief that sustainability is about caring for people, place and planet – and recognising how closely they are connected.

Because a greener future and a stronger economy mean more when everyone has the chance to benefit.

A thriving Tees Valley must work for everyone. 💚

🌍🍎 World Food Day 2026: Innovate today. Nourish tomorrow.

Today, 16 October, is World Food Day - a chance to think about how we can build a food system that works better for people and the planet.

At Nine Yards, we believe everyone should have access to good, affordable food, and that perfectly good food shouldn't go to waste.

That’s why our chain of Eco Shops is so important. By redistributing surplus supermarket food, we help people across Middlesbrough and the Tees Valley make their money go further, while giving good food a second chance.

It’s a practical, community-led way to tackle food waste, improve access to affordable food and help create a fairer, more sustainable future.

Because nourishing tomorrow starts with the action we take today. 💚
