The chaos of the mass start settles, the splashing start to fade out, less arms and elbows around you, and then it’s just you... finding your rhythm in the water, locked in!
For some people, that moment comes early but for others, it takes a while to get there, and for a lot of athletes, it never really comes at all.
But this is something you can build into training and not just face on race day.
The swim is the shortest discipline but it sets the tone for everything that follows. Getting out of the water feeling controlled and composed rather than gassed and rattled can completely change how your bike leg feels, and your run after that.
