Woad was an important dyeing agent in much of Europe and parts of England during the early medieval period. Later in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries it was imported indigo that took over. Woad was one of the three staples of the European dyeing industry, along with weld (yellow) and madder (red).
It was interesting to find a local newspaper announcement for the sale of some Somerby Manor land ‘fit for woading’ dated 1738. We can assume that the Brasenose College map was drawn up at the same time.
Does anyone recognise this location at all?
Thank you to Ray Pitt for identifying this from the field boundaries.
