I’m a cllr and that quote does not speak for my view or 60% residents that had there say

This isn’t about saying we are not Leicestershire. We absolutely are Leicestershire, and always will be. The question is about what structure gives our residents the strongest voice and the best services for the future.

The North, City and South option was the choice supported through the democratic consultation. For Melton, remaining connected with other similar rural and market-town communities makes far more sense than being absorbed into one huge unitary authority.

Melton’s needs are different from those of a large city. We need a council structure that understands our rural communities, market towns, farming, transport challenges and countryside—not one where our voice could be lost in a much larger authority.

North, City and South would allow Melton to work alongside areas with more similar characteristics and challenges, while still being close enough geographically to deliver joined-up and effective services.

For me, this comes down to democracy. Over 60% of people supported the option they were given. We cannot simply ignore the public because some people preferred a different outcome.

We are Leicestershire—full stop. But being Leicestershire does not mean we should accept a structure that residents did not choose.

The public spoke. We should listen.

Plans for a major shake-up of local government have been put on hold.

Proposals to merge smaller councils to form larger authorities in Nottinghamshire, Derbyshire and Leicestershire will be reviewed and paused.
