We are taking the unusual step this afternoon of sharing open water safety advice from a local District Councillor, but with good reason: former Mayor of Charnwood Dr Julie Bradshaw was a professional swimmer, who first swam the English Channel at the age of 15, and then did so again a few years later, smashing the previous world record by more than nine hours. She was also awarded an MBE for Services to Swimming and Charity.

She is, in short, a highly respected expert in the field of open water swimming, and her advice on the subject coincides with our own: open water is dangerous, and should be avoided.

We are reinforcing this clear, simple message, firstly because tragically there have been more than 10 accidental drownings across the UK this week, including children and teenagers, but also because we've noticed a worrying amount of people questioning and contradicting this safety advice on social media recently.

If you're not going to take our word for it, please take hers: https://orlo.uk/y0zh9

⚡️ INCIDENT UPDATE: LIGHTNING STRIKE & HOUSE FIRE IN MELTON⚡️
Early this morning, a severe electrical storm rolled through Melton, bringing an intense display of lightning. Unfortunately, one of those strikes directly hit the roof space of two properties, sparking a significant and fast-moving fire.

Our on-call crews scrambled immediately, arriving on scene to a highly challenging situation. Facing continuous, extreme weather, our firefighters initiated an aggressive, rapid attack to bring the flames under control.
Here is a look at the resources required to tackle the blaze safely and quickly:

* 8 Breathing Apparatus (BA) wearers sent directly into the smoke
* Multiple hose reel jets to suppress the fire
* Ladders deployed for roof-level access and ventilation

Despite the brutal weather conditions, the incredible teamwork of our crews paid off.

We are incredibly thankful to report that no one was harmed. Everyone made it out safely. 🙏

🤝 A Big Thank You & Next Steps
We want to extend a massive thank you to all local residents for your incredible cooperation and support during this incident. It makes a tough job a lot easier when the community rallies together.

Looking Ahead:
Over the coming week, our teams will be re-visiting the local area to chat with residents, offer free Home Fire Safety Checks, and fit free smoke alarms to any properties that need them.

Please take a moment to check your own smoke alarms today—they truly save lives. Stay safe, Melton! ❤️🚒

Its Fire Safety on boats Week!

🚤 Boat Fire Safety Reminder🔥

If you own or use a boat, take a few minutes to check your fire safety:

✅ Fit and regularly test smoke alarms and marine-grade carbon monoxide alarms
✅ Never leave cooking unattended
✅ Keep fabrics, towels and clothing away from hobs and heaters
✅ Turn off gas, cooking and heating appliances when not in use
✅ Check fuel, gas and electrical systems regularly
✅ Keep exits clear and make sure everyone on board knows the escape plan

If a fire starts: get out, stay out and call 999

🚒 Road Safety Message from Melton Mowbray Fire Station 🚒

Over recent weeks, we have seen a rise in Road Traffic Collisions across our station area.

Every collision has an impact, not just on those directly involved, but on families, friends, emergency responders, and the wider community. Many serious and fatal collisions are linked to what are known as the Fatal 4:

🚗 Speeding
📱 Using a mobile phone or being distracted while driving
🍺 Drink or drug driving
🔒 Not wearing a seatbelt

These are all choices that can have life-changing consequences.

Please take a moment before every journey to think about how you drive. Stick to the speed limit, put your phone away, never drive under the influence, and make sure everyone in the vehicle is wearing a seatbelt.

Drive safely. Protect yourself. Protect others.
