The day crew have been out today to Mowbray Court, to chat to residents about Fire Safety! A great time was had by all, giving advice around safe cooking and what to do in an emergency! Crews then stuck around to field any questions the residents had!

⚠️🔋 Lithium-ion batteries – small item, big fire risk! 🔋⚠️

Did you know that something as small as a disposable v**e can cause a serious fire if it’s thrown away incorrectly?

Lithium-ion batteries are found in lots of everyday items, including v**es, mobile phones, laptops, power banks, cordless tools, toys and many other rechargeable devices.

🚮 If these batteries end up in general waste or the wrong recycling bin, they can be crushed, punctured or damaged during collection and processing. This can cause them to overheat and catch fire, with fires developing and spreading extremely quickly.

👀 Look out for the crossed-out wheelie bin symbol. If you see it, the item should not go into your normal household waste.

Today, crews from Melton Fire Station visited Melton Recycling and Household Waste Site to highlight how batteries, v**es and electrical items can be disposed of safely.

✅ Recycle batteries at a designated battery collection point.
✅ Take v**es and electrical items to the appropriate electrical recycling point.
❌ Never put batteries or v**es in your general waste.

A few seconds spent disposing of them correctly can help prevent a serious fire.

🔥 ONE INCIDENT AFTER ANOTHER – MELTON ON-CALL CREW 🚒

There was barely time for the Melton On-Call Crew to catch their breath!

Within 10 minutes of leaving a large wildfire on Pork Pie Way, the crew were mobilised to another field fire. 🌾🔥

This fire is believed to have started as a result of poorly discarded smoking materials on a dry grass verge, before spreading into a hedgerow and then into an adjacent field.

With power lines and a wind turbine potentially at risk, the crew quickly got to work.

Thanks to their quick reactions, hard work and dynamic firefighting, the fire was brought under control before it could develop into a much more serious incident. 👏

A fantastic effort from the Melton On-Call Crew, who went from one challenging incident straight into another and once again demonstrated the importance of having local, highly trained firefighters ready to respond when the community needs them. 🚒💪

🔥 Please help us prevent fires: never discard ci******es or smoking materials onto dry grass, verges or vegetation. In these conditions, a small discarded cigarette can quickly become a much bigger problem.

🔥 WILDFIRE – MELTON MOWBRAY 🔥

Melton Fire Crews, supported by multiple crews from across the service, have just returned from a large field fire off Pork Pie Way.

Due to the size, rapid spread and significant flame heights, the incident was classified as a wildfire. 🌾🔥

Crews worked extremely hard and dynamically to bring the fire under control, tackling the fire front and preventing it from spreading towards nearby homes on Willcox Drive. 🏠🚒

A massive shout-out to the farming contractors who were already on scene and acted quickly to assist crews. Their knowledge, equipment and rapid actions undoubtedly helped prevent this fire from becoming significantly larger.

This incident is a great example of what can be achieved when firefighters and our farming community work together. 👏🚜

A huge well done to everyone involved. 💪🚒

No sooner had we returned from helping our colleagues at Suffolk Fire & Rescue Service tackle the devastating blaze in Dunwich Heath (pictured), we were on our travels again... 🚒

Over the weekend, crews from Melton Mowbray, Castle Donington, Wigston and Uppingham supported colleagues at major incidents in both Nottinghamshire and Cambridgeshire.

This cross‑border assistance is vital in ensuring communities receive a safe and effective emergency response during a period of significant demand. It's times like these that the commitment and professionalism of all our Firefighters stands out, not only from those attending, but all who step up at home - including our On-Call teams who make themselves available at short notice.

We continue to have a robust and effective operational capability in Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland but, in moments of need, our nation's Fire Services respond and assist where they can, knowing full well that sooner or later, they'll be the ones who need help.

MAJOR INCIDENT ‼️

As of 1:30 pm, Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service has declared a major incident. This relates to the cumulative impact of multiple incidents placing significant pressure on operational resources, rather than a single incident in isolation.

The Service is currently operating with very limited resources and reduced pump availability. As a result, response times to any further incidents are likely to be delayed.

Still call 999 in an emergency.

We would like to remind people not to light any fires, such as campfires or BBQs, and to take extra care when disposing of ci******es due to the incredibly dry conditions, as a spark could spread quickly.

Crews are currently at Saxelby Top Farm extinguishing a large compost heap fire. This is causing large amounts and smoke and due to the wind people in the Ab Kettleby and Welby area may be affected.

🚒 What a month for our Melton On-Call Firefighters! 🚒

July has been an exceptionally busy month for our dedicated on-call crew, who responded to more than 80 emergency incidents while balancing their commitment with full-time jobs, family life, and everyday responsibilities.

During July, the team attended:

🔥 35 fire-related incidents
🚨 15 automatic fire alarms
🚒 13 standby moves providing strategic fire cover while other major incidents were taking place across the county
🚗 4 road traffic collisions
🤝 6 incidents assisting other emergency services and partner agencies
☣️ 2 hazardous materials incidents
🛟 4 rescue incidents

Being an on-call firefighter means responding from home or work at a moment’s notice, 24 hours a day when available. It takes an incredible level of commitment, professionalism, and selflessness to answer that pager, often leaving family meals, celebrations, hobbies, or a good night’s sleep behind to help someone in need.

Behind every on-call firefighter is a supportive family, employer, and friends who also make sacrifices. Their understanding and encouragement make it possible for our crews to continue protecting the communities they serve.

A huge thank you to every member of the Melton On-Call team for your dedication throughout July, and to your families and employers for the support you provide. We are incredibly proud of what you do and grateful for everything you contribute in support of our wholetime colleagues and the wider service.
