With the World Cup bringing people together this summer, we also want to highlight an important issue that can sometimes go unnoticed.

Research shows that reports of domestic abuse can increase during major football tournaments, with figures suggesting incidents rise by around 26% when England play and up to 38% if England lose.

Football itself doesn’t cause domestic abuse, but heightened emotions, stress, and alcohol can intensify already difficult situations.

England’s bid for World Cup 2026 kicks off tomorrow.

Worryingly, domestic abuse reports rise by 38% when England lose a match – meaning there's more at stake than the result on the pitch.

If you’re concerned about someone who may be experiencing abuse, you can speak to our charity completely anonymously.
