At 00:59 hours this morning, we attended an incident on Main Street, Ticknall involving a log burner that was giving out excessive heat after the use of manufactured fire logs.

Fortunately, the incident was dealt with safely and quickly, but it highlights the importance of using the correct fuel for your stove or log burner.

Some manufactured fire logs can produce extremely high temperatures and may cause stoves, flues and chimneys to overheat if used incorrectly.

🔥 Safety reminders:
• Always follow the manufacturer’s guidance
• Never overload your stove
• Use only suitable approved fuels
• Have chimneys swept and maintained regularly
• If a stove or flue begins glowing red or making a roaring sound, close the air vents, keep the stove door shut and call 999 if concerned

Thieves target lifesaving firefighting equipment at Whaley Bridge for second time.

For the second time, thieves have broken into Whaley Bridge Fire Station and stolen essential lifesaving hydraulic equipment.

The latest theft took place between 8am Saturday 16 May and midnight, with the thieves forcing entry through a window.

It is estimated the value of the hydraulic cutting gear stolen, which includes a power pack, hoses, cutters, spreaders and hydraulic ram is between £20k - £25k.

Speaking about the theft, Group Manager Nic Lacey said: “Not only does this equipment have a high monetary value, but the real value in this equipment is the role it plays in saving lives, specifically at road traffic collisions where this type of equipment is essential.

“Tragically this is the second time Whaley Bridge Fire Station has been targeted by thieves and is one of several thefts impacting Derbyshire fire stations since 2019. This is also a national issue with these thefts affecting fire services across the whole of the UK.

“While the Service has made improvements to its station security, we would like to ask the public to continue to be vigilant and help us by reporting any suspicious activity at any fire station.”

This morning the Service is working with Derbyshire Constabulary as they commence their investigation into the theft.

Our new recruitment banner is now up at Melbourne Sainsbury's. A huge thank you to the team at Sainsbury’s for supporting our campaign to recruit more firefighters for Melbourne Fire Station.

They’ve not only helped us promote recruitment within the community, but they also actively support members of staff who maybe interested in the role and may need to respond to incidents as on-call firefighters.

That level of community commitment shows real values and genuine investment in their people.

Thank you for your continued support — it’s greatly appreciated by all of us at Melbourne Fire Station. 🚒

Today we pay tribute to retired L/FF John Dando, who proudly served in the fire service at Melbourne from 1979 to 1999.

Across two decades of dedicated service, John showed commitment, professionalism, and courage in protecting the community and supporting his fellow firefighters. His years in the job represent a lifetime of memories, challenges, and friendships that remain an important part of our fire service family.

Although now long retired, John’s contribution and service are still remembered and greatly appreciated by those who served alongside him and the community he helped protect.

Thank you for your service, John.
A respected firefighter, and friend.

Can we please ask that if our recycling bin is full, please bring your clothing back another day. We do get regular collections and we really do appreciate people using the clothing bank, but we just can’t have items left like this. Thanks for your patience and cooperation,
WM Andy Astle.
