Following the May 2023 elections, councillors from the Green, Labour and Liberal Democrat parties came together to form the Progressive Alliance, with a shared commitment to work collaboratively for the people of the Derbyshire Dales.
This Corporate Plan set out our ambitions, priorities and actions. Reaching the halfway stage provides an important opportunity to reflect honestly on progress against nearly 100 projects, recognise achievements of half being completed, and consider where we must adapt our approach in response to changing circumstances.
District Council Leader Councillor Steve Flitter said: "A thriving environment remains central to our vision. Over the first half of the Plan, we have focused on reinvigorating our climate change and biodiversity ambitions, working with businesses, farmers and communities to reduce carbon emissions and enhance the natural environment.
"As we move into the second half of the Plan, our focus will be on building momentum - strengthening delivery, expanding partnership working and embedding environmental improvements that protect and enhance our unique landscape for future generations.
"This environmental commitment continues to sit alongside our determination to improve housing in the district. Ensuring that residents can live and prosper in their own communities, with access to affordable, high quality homes that are fit for the future, remains a priority as we respond to ongoing housing pressures and the impacts of climate change.
"We also remain committed to fostering prosperous and sustainable communities. Working with partners across the public and private sectors, we have sought to create the conditions for economic resilience, job opportunities and financial stability for residents. At the mid point of the Plan, we recognise the need to continue attracting investment while supporting local businesses and adapting to wider economic challenges."
Councillor Flitter added that high quality local services continue to underpin everything we do.
"Our waste collection service remains highly valued by residents, and we will continue to protect its quality while exploring opportunities to improve efficiency and value for money," Councillor Flitter said.
"More broadly, we are committed to ensuring that our services remain accessible, responsive and sustainable in the face of rising costs and constrained resources.
"We have also approached difficult and long standing issues with openness and honesty. We have reviewed public toilet provision, parking capacity, and the future of our leisure centres, recognising the financial pressures involved while remaining focused on long term community benefit. We continue to work towards fair and workable solutions for Traveller accommodation, addressing an issue that has remained unresolved for far too long.
"Throughout delivery of the Plan, we have sought to work in an open, inclusive and transparent way, supported by a committed council workforce. As we enter the second half of the Plan period, our focus will be on strengthening capacity, making best use of available resources and ensuring we are well placed to deliver our remaining priorities.
"Finally, we will continue to speak up on issues that matter to our communities but fall beyond the direct control of the District Council, including access to GP services, education, highways and congestion, and decisions affecting tourism provision within the Peak District National Park.
"This mid point review reaffirms the Leadership’s ambition and sets the direction for the remainder of the Plan. Through continued collaboration, determination and openness, we remain committed to making the Derbyshire Dales a beautiful, prosperous, safe and welcoming place - now and for the future."
