This summer we are recieving a boost to our response times in the Lake District and along the Cumbrian coast with a new seasonal helicopter base in Carlisle. Usually, taskings for helicopters in The Lakes would come from Prestwick or Caernarfon but now with the new base in Carlisle, response times to emergencies will be sped up drastically when a rescue helicopter is needed.

This afternoon, HM Coastguard received a 999 call following the capsize of an inflatable canoe on Derwent Water, Keswick. Three people were involved across two inflatable canoes, none wearing any form of personal flotation device.

One person reached the shore, another made it to St Herbertโ€™s Island, and the third remained in the water.

A multiagency response was initiated involving;
Coordination from Belfast Coastguard,
Whitehaven Coastguard Rescue Team
Maryport Coastguard Rescue Team
Keswick Mountain Rescue Team
Cumbria Police
North West Ambulance Service NHS Trust
Cumbria Fire & Rescue Service
Coastguard Rescue Helicopter 199
Great North Air Ambulance Service
Assistance from Keswick Launch On Derwentwater

All three casualties were recovered and brought to the control point, where they were each assessed by the GNAAS crew before being discharged at the scene.

While this incident had a positive outcome, it serves as a reminder to all water users of the importance to check weather conditions, carry and use appropriate safety equipment, carry a means of calling for help and ensure they have the skills for the conditions before setting out. Your life depends on it.

The Whitehaven Coastguard Rescue Team & Maryport Coastguard Rescue Team were tasked this morning, to assist Cumbria Police with a missing person search in the area of Harrington.

With some of the team already in the vicinity, one of our Officers in Charge (OIC) was able to swiftly liaise with police colleagues to understand the situation and plan for a hasty search of the area of interest on arrival of the team.

Within minutes of the team departing station, the welcome news was received that police had located the missing person inland.

Yesterday we had a open day for the public to come and see what we do. We asked our partners at Maryport Rescue to do some water training with us. As you can see from the video it was a fun day had by all. I would like to thank them for the offer and time they gave us today and also the members of public that stopped and asked who we where and what we do.

The aim of today was to recruit new officers for the team and hopefully it was a benefit to all involved.

Our recruitment is still open for anybody that wants to join our team. Our recruitment is still open, to join us go to https://hmcoastguard.uk/volunteer-as-a-coastguard

Weโ€™d like to remind everyone that flares should only be used in genuine distress situations. They shouldnโ€™t be used for entertainment or as fireworks during celebrations.

If we receive an alert at or near the coast where a flare has been launched, we will always respond and wonโ€™t know the difference if you are using them as fireworks. This can tie up resources when they're not needed, putting our coastguard rescue teams at unnecessary risk and potentially diverting them from a legitimate emergency.

If you think someone could be in trouble at the coast, always call 999 and ask for the Coastguard.
