The Town Council has installed a plaque at Redby Coffee Shop in recognition of the contribution which the renowned Johnny Rafferty made to the area. The building is the site of his premises which he opened in the 1930’s as the unlicensed Unemployed Workers Movement Club, (later becoming the West Cumberland Social Clubs Ltd), at a time when Maryport’s level of unemployment ranged between 75% & 85%, & the unemployed could obtain cheap meals, play games such as darts, dominoes & cards all day, watch films & play bingo.

Johnny Rafferty arrived in jobs-beleaguered Maryport from Scotland in 1921, an itinerant Scottish beggar, with the town suffering during the depression years. Rafferty gave his support to the means tested claims of Maryport families & won concessions in areas where others dare not intervene. As a result, he had a huge local following & became a folk hero in the area.

A life-long member of the Communist Party, Johnny Rafferty was a man who firmly divided opinion; he had thousands of friends but also many enemies. Over the 50 years from his arrival until his death in 1971, he put his indelible stamp on the community.

Temporary Closure of Glasson Ind Est HWRC, Maryport (Maryport HWRC), to replace the compactor.

Maryport HWRC will be required to close on Tuesday 22nd September to enable our contractor to replace the compactor.

Whilst the HWRC is closed, local residents will be encouraged to hold on to their waste, but where necessary will be directed to the nearest alternative HWRC at either ClayFlatts HWRC (Workington) or Syke Park HWRC (Wigton). Permits for vans and trailers issued for Maryport HWRC will be accepted at all the other HWRCs in the area. Residents applying for permits for Maryport HWRC are being informed of the planned closure when they are issued with their permit.

The Communications Plan will use all available channels: At the HWRC signs informing residents of the temporary closure has been installed on site and the site staff fully briefed to inform service users. Cumberland Council (CC) will inform residents via the CC website, and a public notice will also be published in the News and Star.

The RWE Robin Rigg Offshore Windfarm in the Solway Firth has an established Community Benefit Fund. The fund plays a vital role in supporting local projects and initiatives, helping strengthen and enrich communities within our region. Solway Firth Partnership administers the fund on both sides of the Solway.

The Robin Rigg Community Fund 2026/27 is now open for applications.
