Slate Hill Charcoal Co.

Slate Hill Charcoal Co. Wessex sustainable single species lumpwood charcoal.

We are a family run company specialising in the production of single-species sustainable British BBQ charcoal and Biochar. The huge amount of imported and ecologically destructive barbecue charcoal on the market in the UK has fuelled us to begin producing our own charcoal from our base in Wiltshire, and support the regeneration and conservation of local woodlands and biodiversity. Fast lighting, h

ot burning and flavour filled, our charcoal is a completely different product to the smoky, smouldering, ashy lumps that are associated with British barbecuing. Ready to cook on in as little as 5 minutes, you don't have to plan or wait for your coals to reach temperature. Experience different cooking characteristics and flavour profiles from different species of wood, support the management of British woodlands and protect overseas forests from illegal logging.

| G R A D I N G | We often grade our biochar into two different fractions, 25mm to 8mm and 8mm to dust. This gives us a few different products with the larger size often being used in traditional blacksmithing (not biochar!) or water filters. The smaller fraction makes a really nice to use biochar for home composting and poultry bedding, and in this case is going to be used by as the substrate in their innovative mycorrhizal product “Mycochar”.

It’s a steady process and our bagging machine certainly wasn’t purpose built for this but it’s great to be an able to tailor biochar’s to different uses.

Wishing everyone a very Happy Easter 🐣 from us and thank you for an incredible start to the year! ☀️🔥☺️

One of our latest adventures at Slate Hill Charcoal has been setting up a biochar barrel kiln at the new Zerodig horticulture site. The Zerodig project is researching sustainable food production using no-dig methods. Biochar can be added to compost to help improve crop yield by absorbing otherwise wasted nutrients and aiding in water retention, whilst also sequestering carbon for potentially thousands of years. This kiln will eventually process local coppice waste into biochar for a fully circular system.

One of the most important things that makes a charcoal sustainable is the feedstock. This is where it all begins, where flavour and burn characteristics meet environmental credentials.

A lot of our charcoal is made from Ash, sourced locally from just 5 miles from our base. This is all felled under an approved management plan designed to benefit the future of the woodland, sustainably. The Ash dieback disease has had a profound impact on woodland management in the UK, and will drastically change the way our tree cover looks in the future. Charcoal is a perfect way to use this damaged timber, especially if it offsets an imported product.

As a charcoal company we frequently receive offers from overseas companies wanting to bring charcoal into the UK, and on more than one occasion have been offered mangrove charcoal. MANGROVE CHARCOAL 🤦‍♂️

There are plenty of great British charcoal producers out there, with a great British product made from great British woodlands.
