Impersonation Fraud - Trigger Fraud Alert #43 (August 2026)

Re: Impersonation Fraud

Lloyds Banking Group have announced that the Halifax brand will change to Lloyds. Halifax customers may receive contact directly through trusted channels, including the Halifax app, online banking, email and by letter.

IMPORTANT – The bank will never ask you to move money, transfer funds or share security details as part of this change. If anyone contacts a customer asking them to do this, it is a fraud!

If you have any concerns, visit a branch or call your bank on a trusted number which can be found on the back of your bank card or dial 159

🔵 Remember:

Don’t trust your caller ID display on your phone – fraudsters use software that can change the appearance of their phone number and appear different on your phone screen (like a local number). Landline phones can have a delay. When you put the phone down and pick it back up, you could still be on the phone with the fraudster.

If anyone cold calls you, it is ok to Hang up!

The police or your bank will not contact you out of the blue to participate in an investigation or send a courier to your home to collect bank cards, cash, gift cards or other valuable items. Any requests to do so are fraud.

If you have been a victim and lost money, call 101 and report it to Humberside Police.

Doorstep Fraud - Trigger Fraud Alert #44 (September 2026)

Re: Doorstep Fraud

Public Awareness Notice – Two Separate Incidents in the Humberside Area

A salesperson has been reported knocking on doors in an area with a high number of elderly residents, offering to buy gold for cash on the doorstep. The salesperson was described as very persistent and pushy, raising concerns that residents may feel pressured into agreeing to sell items.

A separate incident involved a salesperson knocking on doors claiming to offer cheaper gas and electricity than the resident’s current energy supplier. The offer included the first month free and no regular energy bills, with customers instead being asked to pay cash each month for their usage. Concerns have been raised that the resident’s actual energy supplier could later issue a large bill for unpaid energy charges.

🔵 Say NO to doorstep callers:

- If a stranger is at your property and refuses to leave, or you feel threatened or intimidated, or they become aggressive, call the police on 999.

- It is your home; you do not have to answer the door to cold callers. If you do answer, use a door chain, door viewer or smart doorbell to check who is there before deciding whether to open the door.

- Never feel pressured to buy, sell or sign anything on the spot.

- If you do open the door, ask for ID and check any company information provided. Don’t be afraid to tell someone to leave if you are not comfortable or were not expecting anyone.

- Set up a password system with your utility providers so you can check whether someone claiming to represent them is genuine. The Priority Services Register (PSR) is a free UK-wide service that can provide additional support to eligible customers.

🚨 New Fraud Forums launching across the Humberside area!

Community VISION, through the FraudWatch project and in partnership with Humberside Police, is launching two localised Fraud Forums to bring organisations together and strengthen the response to fraud across the Humberside area.

We are now looking for organisations to become members of the new forums and help build a strong network of partners working together to prevent fraud, share information and better protect our communities.

The forums are for individuals representing organisations, services and agencies with an interest in fraud prevention, community safety, safeguarding, supporting victims or protecting people from fraud and cybercrime.

Two forums are being established:

📍 Hull & East Riding Fraud Forum
📍 Northern Lincolnshire Fraud Forum

Members will be able to share emerging concerns and local intelligence, hear updates from partners, discuss fraud trends and identify opportunities for joint working.

You can find out more about the launch of the Fraud Forums here: https://s-url.co/SLI0AA

Fraud alert: Trusted family members, friends, and carers stole £51 million from pensioners

Older and vulnerable people are seeing millions of pounds stolen from them with the fraud committed by those closest to them, according to new figures released by the City of London Police, the national lead force for fraud.

Data from Report Fraud reveals that criminals stole £93.8 million through fraud by abuse of position during the 2025/26 financial year, with people aged 70 and over accounting for more than £51 million of those losses.

A total of 3,812 reports of fraud by abuse of position were made during the year. This type of fraud occurs when someone exploits a position of responsibility, authority, or trust to access and steal a victim's money, assets or property without lawful authority. Offenders are often family members, friends, carers, employees, or individuals entrusted to manage another person's finances or affairs.

The data shows older people are disproportionately affected. Victims aged 70 and over accounted for more than £51 million in reported losses, while those aged 80 to 89 suffered the highest number of reports and the highest financial losses of any age group, losing almost £24 million.

Analysis of Report Fraud data identified a number of common offending methods. Many cases involved family members or close friends abusing their position to gain access to a victim's finances, often by stealing bank cards, obtaining banking details or making unauthorised transfers from accounts they could access through regular contact with the victim. In some instances, offending continued after a victim's death, with relatives allegedly manipulating wills or other legal documents to gain control of estates, property, and financial assets.

The data also identified 764 reports involving the misuse of powers of attorney, resulting in reported losses of £34.6 million. These cases typically involved offenders exploiting a position of legal authority to control a victim's finances and make unauthorised withdrawals for personal gain. The offending was often linked to elderly or vulnerable victims who relied on trusted individuals to help manage their affairs.

There were also 444 reports involving social care workers abusing their position, with reported losses totalling £13.3 million. These cases commonly involved offenders gaining access to victims' bank cards, financial information or personal belongings while providing care and support.

The findings highlight how offenders can target people during periods of vulnerability, including ill health, cognitive decline and bereavement. During the reporting period, dementia was referenced in 337 reports and victims were described as vulnerable in 359 reports. The data also identified reports involving probate and allegations of wills or estates being manipulated for financial gain, demonstrating how offenders can exploit individuals and families at some of the most difficult points in their lives.

The City of London Police is encouraging anyone who supports an elderly relative, acts under a power of attorney, is involved in administering an estate, or works within the care sector to remain vigilant for signs of financial abuse. Most Abuse of Position reports made to the police come from family members of elderly or vulnerable people who rely on others for care and support with managing their finances.

We are encouraging organisations and members of the public to share the following guidance with patients, service users, and their family members:

- Review financial statements: check financial statements regularly for any unauthorised transactions. If anything appears suspicious, contact the bank as soon as possible.

- Watch for warning signs: be alert to unpaid bills, missing possessions, or unexpected changes to a will or bank account, as these may be indicators of financial abuse.

⚫ What to do if you are a victim of fraud by abuse of position:

- Tell your bank or card provider: if you notice any financial transactions made without lawful authority, notify your bank or card provider as soon as possible.

- Act quickly if something feels wrong: you can raise a safeguarding concern with your local authority’s adult social care team. If a solicitor or deputy may be misusing their role, you can report your concerns to the Office of the Public Guardian.

⚫ How to report it:

Report it to Report Fraud online or call 0300 123 2040. For more advice and to raise any concerns, contact the Office of the Public Guardian.

Students urged to ‘stop and think before you click’ as student finance payments begin - Trigger Fraud Alert #45 (September 2026)

Students are being warned to watch out for Student Finance fraud as maintenance loan payments begin for the new academic year.

The Student Loans Company (SLC) is due to pay around £2.6 billion in maintenance support to 1.1 million students during September. Fraudsters know when these payments are being made and may use convincing emails, text messages or phone calls to try to steal personal and financial information.

Fraudulent messages may claim that:

- Your Student Finance payment has been blocked or is at risk.
- You need to urgently update your bank details.
- There is a problem with your Student Finance account.
- Your account will be closed unless you take immediate action.

🔵 How to protect yourself

Stop and think before you click. Do not click links in unexpected messages claiming to be from Student Finance or the Student Loans Company.

The Student Loans Company will never ask you to provide or confirm personal or financial information by email or text, or give you an urgent deadline threatening to close your account. Student Finance England and SLC also do not provide services through WhatsApp or initiate contact through social media about your application or entitlement.

If you receive an unexpected message, go directly to GOV.UK and sign in to your Student Finance account rather than following a link in the message.

Suspicious emails can be forwarded to [email protected], while suspicious text messages can be forwarded free of charge to 7726. If you think your Student Finance account has been compromised, contact the Student Loans Company using the official contact details on GOV.UK.

Remember: Stop. Think. Check. Don’t let urgency make the decision for you.
