Approximately 6 minutes before this, the crew were tucked up in bed in their homes…

Their pagers alerted, they made their way to the Fire Station, grabbed their fire kit and jumped aboard the fire engine!

None of the crew knew the job they were going to attend, until the Officer in Charge told them, but what they all did know was that;

🚒 They had the skills and knowledge to deal with the incident that would face them
🚒 They wanted to serve their communities and were happy to be woken up in the middle of the night and leave their homes
🚒 They may do this more than once a
night

Thursday 14th of August, Multiple crews have been in attendance at a make pumps eight, plus special appliances fire, this incident involved a field and scrubland in Battram village near Coalville, which affected approx 25 acres of grassland and woods.

We arrived as 2nd appliance to a well developed and rapidly spreading wildfire 🔥🌲 🌳 🌾

Our crews worked incredibly hard to prevent fire spread to nearby houses, along with help from a team of local farmers with tractors and water bowsers 🏡🏘️

Please take extra care during this prolonged dry period we are experiencing to prevent fires occurring outdoors 🚒

One of our own team, Andy, was part of the crew sent to Suffolk Fire and Rescue to assist in the nationally coordinated efforts to tackle the huge wildfire.

Aiden, who is also one of our crew, has travelled to Suffolk today, to support the firefighting efforts.

Why Do We Close Roads at Emergency Incidents?

We understand that road closures can be frustrating and inconvenient, especially when you're trying to get to work, home or an appointment. However, when Fire and Rescue Service crews close a road, it is always for a very good reason.

At several recent incidents, our firefighters have encountered motorists and cyclists ignoring road closure signs and attempting to pass through restricted areas. This behaviour not only places those individuals at risk but can also affect our crews' ability to work safely and efficiently.

Emergency incidents are often unpredictable environments. Hazards can include:

- Fire and smoke
- Damaged electrical equipment or power lines
- Unstable vehicles involved in collisions
- Structural damage to buildings
- Debris on the road that could be harmful to you or your vehicle

Road closures help create a safe working area for emergency responders and protect members of the public from potential danger. Every unnecessary vehicle or cyclist entering the scene adds to the risk and can delay the vital work being carried out.

If you see a road closure sign, please remember:

- The road is closed for a reason
- Follow diversion routes where provided
- Respect instructions from emergency services personnel
- Help us keep everyone safe

We appreciate your patience and cooperation. By respecting road closures, you're helping firefighters, police officers, ambulance crews and other emergency responders do their jobs safely and effectively.

Please don't put yourself or others at risk. If the road is closed, turn around and find an alternative route.
