Our Story
The RNLI was created in 1824 to save lives at sea and provides an on-call 24 hour lifeboat rescue service. On average there are 23 call-outs per day around the shores of the United Kingdom. The RNLI also provides valuable seasonal lifeguard services, including those around our North Thanet Coastline. The Margate Birchington & Districts Fundraising Group was formed, in 2019, by the merger of the former Margate Fundraising Group, which has long been associated with the Margate Lifeboat Station, with the Birchington & Districts Group that operated as a separate fundraising entity for over 30 years. In that time the two local bands of volunteers worked tirelessly to raise awareness and funds for the Royal National Lifeboat Institute, and to ensure that local services can be maintained - and the combined team is committed to continue in that endeavour. We are a small and friendly community-based branch, running various social events during the year, as well as occasional street collections and maintaining collection boxes in shops and businesses throughout north Thanet.
