🏛️ SHIREBROOK VILLAGE HALL – HAVE YOUR SAY

Shirebrook Town Council wants to hear from you!

We are holding a public consultation meeting on Monday 21st September at 7.00pm at Shirebrook Village Hall to hear your views on what you, the residents of Shirebrook, would like to see the Village Hall used for in the future.

The Village Hall is your community asset, and we want residents to have a genuine opportunity to help shape its future.

Last year, we fought to keep the Village Hall within the community and away from the proposed CIC. Now it is over to you, the residents of Shirebrook, to tell us what you would like to see happen.

Following Cllr Luke Shorthose's post a few weeks ago, there have already been lots of positive ideas and interesting conversations about how the hall could be used. We now want to take those ideas further and hear directly from as many residents as possible.

We appreciate that not everyone is on social media, which is why we are holding this formal public meeting so please spread the WORD.

Let's all keep Shirebrook safe

We kindly ask everyone not to have garden fires during hot and dry weather 🚫

The recent spell of warm weather has led to dry conditions, increasing the risk of fire spreading quickly and unexpectedly. Even a small garden fire can spread to nearby gardens, property, vegetation and open spaces.

If you're clearing garden waste, please consider alternatives such as composting, taking it to your local recycling centre, or using your garden waste collection service.

By avoiding garden fires and taking extra care outdoors, you can help prevent accidental fires and keep our communities safe!

Shirebrook Town Council A New Chapter Built on Integrity, Hard Work and Renewal
The newly formed Shirebrook Town Council has stepped into one of the most challenging periods in the town’s recent civic history. Following 11 councillor resignations within just five months during the second half of 2025, the council inherited not only an administrative vacuum but also a community understandably concerned about stability, transparency, and direction.
Since early 2026, what has taken place is nothing short of a clean up operation driven by professionalism, voluntary service, and a genuine commitment to restoring trust in local governance.
A Council Built on Integrity, Transparency and Hard Work
Every serving councillor is fully voluntary. No allowances. No payments. No perks. No “brown envelopes”. Councillors use their own electricity, their own printers, and their own resources to carry out council duties.
A significant personal time commitment. Many councillors routinely contribute 30+ hours per week to council work preparing agendas, researching funding opportunities, writing reports, scrutinising legacy issues, responding to residents, and ensuring meetings are professionally run.
A renewed culture of accountability. The new administration has prioritised:
• Proper record keeping
• Clear and open communication
• Compliance with HR and governance standards
• Transparent decision making
• Respectful treatment of staff, councillors, and residents
After a period of instability, the council is demonstrating that public service can be delivered with honesty, dignity, and genuine care for the community.
The Reality of What Was Inherited
It is important to acknowledge the challenges without dwelling on them:
• A council hollowed out by mass resignations
• Administrative backlogs requiring urgent attention
• Legacy issues needing scrutiny, correction, or complete reconstruction
• A community left unsure who was representing them
• Historical deals good or bad for Shirebrook
These were not minor problems. They required a council willing to roll up its sleeves and rebuild from the ground up.
The Clean Up Operation: What the New Council Has Achieved
The new councillors have taken decisive steps to stabilise and modernise Shirebrook Town Council:
• Re establishing proper committee structures
• Scrutinize ongoing projects
• Rebuilding documentation and audit trails
• Ensuring HR compliance and respectful conduct
• Restoring confidence in council processes
• Strengthening relationships with partners, charities, and residents
• Bringing professionalism back into every meeting and decision
All of this has been achieved without pay, without allowances, and without external incentives — simply because councillors believe Shirebrook deserves a council that works hard, acts legally, and puts the community first.
Working With Key Partners – NHS, Funding Bodies, Councils, Legal Teams & Residents
A major part of Shirebrook’s renewal has been the council’s commitment to active engagement with authorities and organisations that influence the town’s future.
Councillors have been meeting with:
• NHS representatives to address local health concerns and improve access to services
• Funding bodies to secure investment for community projects, sports facilities, and infrastructure
• Neighbouring councils and district partners to strengthen regional cooperation
• Legal teams to ensure decisions are compliant, transparent, and properly documented
• Residents through direct engagement, emails, conversations, and community outreach
This is modern, responsible local leadership: meeting with authorities, challenging issues, and bringing new opportunities into Shirebrook.
Chasing the £651,000 S106 Monies Owed to Shirebrook
One of the most significant ongoing priorities is securing the £651,000 in Section 106 (S106) developer contributions owed to Shirebrook funding intended to support local infrastructure, facilities, and improvements.
The council is actively:
• Reviewing historic agreements
• Contacting district authorities
• Pressing for transparency and accountability and for the money to be released to help Shirebrook in it struggles with poor Health outcomes and increase wellbeing.
• Ensuring Shirebrook’s interests are fully represented
This is about fairness, compliance, and delivering what the town has been promised. The new council is determined to ensure Shirebrook receives the funding it is entitled to.
The Tide Is Turning Hard Work Ahead, Positive Outcomes Emerging
Despite the challenges inherited, one thing is clear: the tide is turning.
Shirebrook now has a council built on integrity, effort, and genuine community commitment. There is still much to do rebuilding processes, securing funding, strengthening partnerships but the direction is positive and unmistakable.
Every week, some councillors are:
• Meeting with authorities
• Challenging long standing issues which require explanation
• Bringing new ideas and opportunities into the town
• Delivering outcomes residents can see and feel
Progress is no longer a promise it is happening.
Shirebrook is entering a new chapter built on honesty, hard work, and renewal. The positive outcomes already emerging will grow into long term benefits for the whole community.
The tide is turning and Shirebrook is moving forward.

Shirebrook Town Council Working Hard for a Better Shirebrook
Shirebrook Town Council has been working incredibly hard to make our town a better, stronger, and more positive place for everyone. Not everything can be fixed overnight, and some issues will take time but real progress is happening.

Shirebrook is served by 16 voluntary councillors, with 12 newly elected or co‑opted within the last eight months. Many projects were left half‑finished, and several required proper scrutiny before they could be safely signed off. This work takes time, care, and professionalism.

It quickly became clear that STC needed to strengthen its governance. The council has now set up a legal team and brought in HR services to help straighten out administrative issues, ensure compliance, and protect the audit trail. This is essential work, and it is already making a difference.

STC is committed to straightening everything out, being transparent, and remaining open to scrutiny. Good governance is the foundation of a strong community.

Positive Progress Across Shirebrook
Despite the challenges, there is a lot to be proud of:

The Market is very close to reopening, bringing regeneration, footfall, and new opportunities for Shirebrook and surrounding areas.

Major improvements at the Leisure Centre have been achieved.

A brand‑new 3G pitch is now in place.A full‑size football pitch is expected to follow shortly which will be free for all residents to enjoy for their wellbeing.

Fishing pegs will be fully revamped, improving local outdoor recreation.

Wellbeing in Shirebrook is growing fast, thanks to the incredible groups, volunteers, and teams who give their time to support our community.
