🦌 What a Week for This Beautiful Boy… and a Reality Small Wildlife Rescues Face Every Day
Today, our team travelled all the way to Torksey Lock, Lincoln, to assist a terrified deer trapped inside an enclosed private garden with absolutely no way out. Frightened, stressed and with nowhere safe to go, this beautiful wild animal had been left trapped for days.
The wonderful volunteers at Canal & River Trust at Torksey Lock had reportedly tried everything to get him help, making multiple calls to the RSPCA, fire service, police and wildlife rescues, but nobody would attend.
That is, until they found us.
Yesterday evening, Becky and Simon made the 55-minute journey to assess the situation and see if he could be safely freed. Sadly, he was simply too active and terrified for two people to handle safely, so a plan was made to return early this morning with a bigger team.
And what a challenge he was!
This poor lad was leaping around in panic, frightened and exhausted. Working calmly and carefully, the team slowly created a safe barrier to reduce the space he had to move and minimise stress. Through patience, teamwork and determination, Glenn was finally able to safely intercept and secure him.
After a full check-over, we were relieved to find he was uninjured and fit for release. The best part? He was safely relocated to a beautiful local woodland where he can now live exactly as nature intended, wild and free 🌲💚
But rescues like this also highlight a difficult reality for small wildlife teams like ours.
Too often, small voluntary rescues are the ones stepping in when animals are left with nowhere else to turn. We give our time, fuel, sleep, finances and energy because every life matters, even when we are already stretched beyond our limits.
This post is not about causing drama. It is about awareness. We want people to understand the pressures small rescues face and why support for wildlife rehabilitation matters so much.
We may be exhausted, but we still made that journey today, because this deer mattered.
A huge thank you to the caring staff and volunteers at Torksey Lock who never gave up on him and did everything they could to get him help.
Wildlife deserves better, and every animal deserves the chance to be safe, free and wild. 🦌
