Hi everybody
Almost every week we get asked to help rehome dogs, usually German Shepherds or Belgian Malinois. The messages are nearly always similar – people saying they no longer have the time, energy, or circumstances to give the dog the home it needs

I wish I could take every single one in. I really do. It breaks my heart knowing how many of these dogs are sitting in kennels around the country waiting for the right home 😔
If you’re thinking about getting one of these breeds, or taking one on through rescue, please make sure you can give it the time, attention, exercise, and training it needs. These are fantastic dogs, but they’re not a breed for everyone ❌
When people get a puppy, we often focus on teaching things like sit, paw, and other tricks because they look cute. In reality, one of the most important things a dog can learn is recall. Being able to trust your dog off lead gives it the freedom to get the exercise and stimulation it needs, while also keeping it safe 🙌🏻
I’ll be the first to admit that I’ve learned this the hard way. I’m still learning every day. I’ve invested a huge amount of time, effort, and money into Storm. Because of the work he does and the fact he’s often in the spotlight, proper training has always been important to us. It has cost thousands but it’s been worth every penny 🎓
Sabre was perfect – truly one of a kind. Storm, on the other hand 🤦♂️ has been a handful at times and has so much more energy 😳 He comes from a strong working line and has a real drive to work. As cute and cuddly as he is, he needs an outlet. He’s an incredibly clever dog and needs both physical exercise and mental stimulation 🐾
I don’t mean this post to sound negative. I’m simply trying to offer some advice to anyone considering getting one of these breeds. There are plenty of excellent training videos and resources online that can help, but please do your research before making the commitment ✅
One resource I’d recommend is Yorkshire Canine Academy, who share lots of free training advice and videos on Instagram. It’s well worth a look if you’re looking for help or guidance with training 👍🏻
