WORKSHOP: NATURE TO PATTERN🌱

Led by multi media artist Felicity, this workshop will begin with some playful drawing exercises on paper and fabric, using dry media such as charcoal, graphite, and pencil. Participants will then develop their marks through collage and charcoal cut-out overlays, exploring layering, negative space, and composition — processes closely related to how textile and fashion designers develop motifs and surface ideas. This will be followed by simple stitching to extend and disrupt the surfaces, with the option to use photocopying to experiment with pattern repeats and scale.

Participants will come away with:

• A set of original paper and textile pattern samples
• Understanding of how designers develop surface and pattern
• Confidence using mark-making, layering, and stitch
• Insight into the relationship between nature, material, and textile design

A 10 minute curator led tour of the museum is also included in the two hours.

TALK:
Beauty and Cosmetics in the Time of Jane Austen
By Sarah Jane Downing

It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single woman in possession of good looks must be in want of ways to enhance her beauty...

This beautifully illustrated talk will reveal the secrets that every Regency heroine should know about being beautiful, from her glossy ringlets to her well-turned toes.

Taking the span of Jane Austen’s life (1775- 1817) Sarah Jane Downing author of Beauty and Cosmetics in the Time of Jane Austen and Beauty and Cosmetics 1550-1950 will explore the trends and changes in philosophy, literature, and art that transformed the concept of beauty from the pretty, powdered, porcelain doll of the Georgian court to the healthy, fresh complexion of Elizabeth Bennet.

Sarah will also be bringing along some of her personal collection of fashion plates for viewing.

To book: Email [email protected], visit our eventbrite or pop into the museum on Fridays and Saturdays 10-4.

To celebrate pride we thought we wanted to shed some light on some of Malvern’s lesser known characters.

Radclyffe Hall published the novel ā€˜A well of loneliness’ in 1928. This iconic sapphic novel covers themes such as gender, sexuality and identity. It follows the main character Stephen Gordon who realises she feels more comfortable dressing as a man and is solely attracted to women.

The book famously ends with an emotional appeal to God: ā€œGive us also the right to our existence!ā€

Hall lived in Malvern for 34 years and was clearly inspired by their surroundings with parts the novel being set in Malvern. However after the release of the novel it was ruled to as obscene and all copies were destroyed.

It was then republished in 1948 after Radcliffe’s death.

If you want to learn more about the lesser known history of Malvern please come and visit the Museum of Fashion Malvern. open every friday and saturday 10am -4pm
