🎥 Inside our new Health-Based Place of Safety

Take a look inside our new Health-Based Place of Safety in Maidstone, that has been designed with people’s dignity, privacy, safety and wellbeing at its heart.

The purpose-built suite will support a more consistent approach to care and has:

🛏️ 5 bedrooms with en suites
📝 Dedicated assessment rooms
🪷 De-escalation spaces
🌿 Secure outdoor areas

The outdoor area features a beautiful and calming image, Crystal Ball Wonders by Alan Smithers, that was taken at King’s Wood near Challock in the Kent Downs Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

The new place of safety has been shaped by the contributions of our staff, people with lived experience, carers and partner organisations, reflecting our shared commitment to compassionate, person-centred care. It will welcome its first patient in early November.

A new place of safety for people experiencing a mental health crisis across Kent and Medway

Today, we officially opened a new Health-Based Place of Safety in Maidstone, marking an important step forward in urgent mental health care across Kent and Medway.

For someone experiencing a mental health crisis, having a safe, supportive environment where they can receive an urgent assessment can make a real difference.

The new suite brings services previously provided across 3 sites together in one dedicated location, helping us provide a more consistent approach to care.

Working closely with Kent Police and our partners, we continue to strengthen the support available to people experiencing a mental health crisis.

The service will welcome its first patient in early November.

This is more than a new environment. It’s an important step towards providing the right care and support when people need it most.

ADHD Awareness Month: Getting the right support at the right time 👐

A partnership of health, education, local government, schools and families across Kent and Medway is helping ensure children and young people with neurodevelopmental needs can access support earlier and based on their individual needs, rather than waiting for a diagnosis.

Over the last 3 years, partners have worked together to strengthen support in schools, improve collaboration across services and make sure parent and carer voices help shape future improvements.

As the programme moves into its next phase, the focus remains on providing children and young people with the right support, at the right time, closer to home.

Change works better when we shape it together 💙

Last week, we brought together people from across Kent and Medway to talk about how we can work together to tackle inequalities in mental health care.

Community organisations, faith leaders, carers, people with lived experience, partners and our colleagues shared their experiences, challenged our thinking and helped us understand what better mental health care could look like.

The conversation explored our Mental Health Act and Restrictive Practice (MHARP) project, and the wider work we are taking forward through the Patient and Carer Race Equality Framework (PCREF).

A huge thank you to everyone who gave their time, ideas and experiences so openly.

This is just the beginning of working together to shape meaningful improvements to the services our communities use.

Rolling up our sleeves to fight flu 💉

Our Deputy Chief Operating Officer, Neil Robertson, may have already had his flu jab this year, but he recently rolled up his sleeves for another reason.

Neil visited Priority House in Maidstone to train as a peer vaccinator, helping to make it even easier for colleagues to get protected this winter.

Flu can be serious and anyone can catch and spread it. Getting vaccinated is the best way to help protect ourselves, our patients, our colleagues, and the people we care about.

A huge thank you to our vaccination teams and peer vaccinators, who are helping keep our workforce and communities safe through clinics and outreach sessions across the trust.

Get creative and help support mental health this festive season ❄️

The Kent and Medway Mental Health Charity is launching a festive greeting card competition and we'd love to see your designs.

We're looking for original artwork inspired by winter, festive traditions, community, kindness and hope.

5 winning designs will be professionally printed and sold as part of our official charity Christmas card collection, with all proceeds helping fund projects that support patients, carers, families and staff across Kent and Medway.

📅 Entries open: Friday 16 October
✏️ Closing date: Friday 6 November
🏆 Winners announced: Friday 13 November
💌 Cards on sale from: Friday 27 November

The competition is open to all ages and abilities, including children, families, schools, community groups and amateur artists.

Baby Loss Awareness Week: A place to remember 🕊️

This Baby Loss Awareness Week, we've created remembrance spaces across Kent where families can remember babies who passed away too soon and connect with others if they choose.

In this video, Dionne, Peer Support Worker with our Thrive Maternal Mental Health Service, shares her personal experience of baby loss and what recovery means to her.

Our Psychology Lead for Perinatal Mental Health Community Service, Dr Athena Duffy, also offers a message of support for anyone currently navigating pregnancy or baby loss.
