Discover the history and wildlife of Beacon Wood Country Park on this 1.25 mile (2km) circular walk, with a shorter 0.6 mile (1km) option available.

Located in Bean, near Dartford, Beacon Wood has a fascinating past. This ancient hilly woodland supplied timber for over 100 years and is believed to have been the site of a beacon used to warn of the approaching Spanish Armada during Elizabethan times. Later, the area became home to gunpowder and cement works, leaving behind the distinctive pitted landscape that visitors can still see today.

As you explore the woodland trails, you'll pass former clay pits that have gradually returned to nature, along with viewpoints overlooking the park's pond, where dragonflies skim the water and freshwater wildlife thrives. The route also offers far-reaching views across the surrounding countryside and areas of naturally regenerating birch woodland.

Looking for some inspiration for this Bank Holiday? The Pluckley Walk follows a gentle circular route through one of Kent’s most picturesque villages, known both for its orchards and for inspiring the world of H. E. Bates’s much-loved Darling Buds of May. Created to celebrate the twentieth anniversary of the television series, this walk takes you through the countryside that brought the Larkin family to life on screen.

Starting in Pluckley, a village long associated with Bates, who lived nearby at Little Chart Forstal, the walk leads you through classic Kent landscapes of orchards, hop gardens and quiet fields. His stories capture the warmth, humour and richness of rural life, and these surroundings remain much as he described them.

As you explore, you will pass through areas connected with the filming of The Darling Buds of May, as well as spots that reflect the rural scenes Bates transformed into vivid storytelling. From peaceful lanes to views across the Low Weald, this route helps you experience the countryside that shaped one of Kent’s most enduring literary voices.

Looking for a walk that combines coast, countryside and history? The route from Deal to Sandwich is a great way to explore two of east Kent's most characterful towns. Covering 6 miles (9.65 km), the walk follows the seafront at Deal before heading inland along the peaceful River Stour into medieval Sandwich.

Along the way, you'll pass Deal Castle, enjoy views across the coastline, and have the chance to spot wildlife around the river and surrounding wetlands. Once you reach Sandwich, why not explore its historic streets or stop off at one of the town's many cafés or pubs for a well-earned refreshment?

The Cuxton to Detling section of the North Downs Way National Trail is a rewarding countryside route that showcases some of the best scenery in the Kent Downs. Covering 11.3 miles (18.2 km), the walk takes you through ancient woodland, chalk grassland and rolling countryside along one of England's most popular National Trails.

Along the way, you'll pass through Ranscombe Farm Nature Reserve, enjoy impressive views from Blue Bell Hill, and discover Kit's Coty, the prehistoric megalithic burial chamber that has stood on the North Downs for thousands of years.

This evening, people across Kent will be able to see the UK's most dramatic partial solar eclipse in nearly three decades.

From the coast to the countryside, anywhere with a clear view of the sky could offer a good view of the eclipse, weather permitting.

Before looking up, make sure you're prepared. It is not safe to view a solar eclipse through sunglasses alone. Safe options include a pinhole viewer, which you can easily make at home, viewing the Sun's image projected through a colander or the gaps between tree leaves, or projecting the Sun's image onto a sheet of paper using a pinhole projector.
