We're proud to announce that we've just been accredited, completing our final IMS assessment covering ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and ISO 45001.

This isn't a box-ticking exercise. It's a prerequisite for direct award contracts with NHS trusts, education bodies and public sector clients who need verified, auditable standards from their contractors.

We're also progressing further environmental and sustainability accreditations alongside this, in line with the decarbonisation frameworks we're targeting.

More to follow as these are confirmed. Procurement managers and estates teams, get in touch at [email protected].

This month's Employee of the Month is Dillon Slee. πŸ™Œ

Dillon is one of our apprentice plumbers, putting in the work on site day in and day out while building his trade from the ground up. That's exactly the kind of graft and commitment we want to see coming through our apprenticeship programme.

Thank you Dillon. It's recognised and appreciated.

A Finance Manager keeps the business financially sound. The numbers, the reporting, the processes that hold everything together behind the scenes.

Michael Greer does all of that. But he didn't stop there.

On top of his core role, he's built automated systems to streamline processes across the business. AI implementation, workflow automation, finance process improvements. All self-taught. He saw gaps, learned what he needed to fill them, and got on with it.

Congratulations to Michael Greer, our Employee of the Month for July. That kind of initiative is exactly what makes Volmech the business it is. Well deserved. πŸ‘

Most NHS and education buildings were designed decades ago, and the systems running them are well past their lifespan.

Decarbonisation doesn't happen in new builds. It happens in the retrofit of what's already there.

For us, that means heat pumps, solar, battery storage and the M&E infrastructure to make it all work in a live, occupied building.

The 2030 EPC targets are creating urgency. The estates teams who'll come out of this well are the ones starting those conversations now.

Managing an NHS or education estate? We're happy to share what we've learned.

A warm welcome to Kaiden Byfield, who has just joined us as our newest electrical apprentice. πŸ™Œ

Kaiden is only one week in and already settling into life on site with us. We are proud to be the place where the next generation of electricians get their start, and we are looking forward to watching him grow into the trade.

Welcome to the team, Kaiden. We know you will do well here.

If you manage a public sector estate in the UK, the EPC and MEES changes coming through 2026 are about to make life more complicated.

The direction of travel is clear. All non-domestic rented buildings will need to hit EPC B or higher by 2030 to remain legally lettable. The new EPC methodology is expected to go live in late 2026, and once it does, a lot of buildings that currently sit at C or D will look very different on paper.

For NHS trusts and education bodies, the challenge is compounded by the fact that these are occupied buildings. You can't take a ward or a classroom offline for six months. The retrofit has to happen around the people using the building every day.

The honest issue isn't 2030. It's that retrofit work takes time. Surveying the building, modelling the upgrades, planning around occupation, getting the right contractor in, sequencing the install. That isn't a six-month job. It's two years minimum on most estates.

The teams who'll come out of this well are the ones planning their retrofit pathway now.

If you're starting to look at your estate against the new EPC rules and want a practical conversation about phasing the upgrades, we're happy to have it.

Every year, same conversation. Plant due out over summer shutdown. Lead times that don't work. A client asking why we can't just make it happen.

Large plants run a on twenty to thirty week lead. By the time you add specification, isolation, crane access and commissioning, you're looking at nine months of planning for four weeks of works.

The clients we deliver best for book their scoping visit now – not in April.

If you've got plant due to come out summer 2027, let's walk the site before August.

Tommy Baker is one of our senior engineers and has been a consistent presence across some of our most demanding projects. Apprentices rotate through working with Tommy as part of their training, and that says a lot about the standard he holds himself to and the way he brings people on.
