How do you honour the past while creating something meaningful for today?

For the team behind the Brookwood 1914โ€“1918 Memorial, this has been one of the most challenging โ€” and most rewarding โ€” parts of the design process.

The result is a memorial designed as a landscape, not just a monument โ€” inviting new ways to engage with our work in commemoration.

This evening, we are at the Cathรฉdrale Notre-Dame de Bayeux for a Service of Thanksgiving with our Torch for Peace โ€” a moment of reflection on the eve of the 82nd anniversary of the Allied landings in Normandy.

Our Director General is among those paying their respects to the men and women who gave their lives for the liberation of Europe. Their sacrifice is commemorated in our cemeteries and memorials across Normandy and beyond.

We were delighted last week to welcome over 5,000 visitors across three evenings of stunning video mapping projections at our Thiepval Memorial in France, marking the start of the commemorations for the 110th anniversary of the Battle of the Somme.

Produced as part of the Video Mapping Festival by the Hauts-de-France region, and was supported by the Communautรฉ de Communes du Pays du Coquelicot.

In Brookwood Military Cemetery, a new memorial is taking shape.

The Brookwood 1914โ€“1918 Memorial marks a new chapter in how we commemorate the missing of the First World War โ€” those with no known grave and no final resting place.

This new memorial will honour servicemen who died in the UK and Ireland during the war, but whose burial locations remain unknown. Discover more in our latest blog via the link below.

*Please Note: The Bayeux Memorial is undergoing renovation to safeguard it for the future. We are very sorry that the Memorial is closed during this period, but this work is essential to protect it for decades to come. The current works form part of a carefully planned programme to ensure the Memorial continues to honour the nearly 1,800 servicemen and women commemorated here with dignity. We have ensured the names of those on the Memorial remain available through the Registers on site, as we know how much this visit can mean for returning veterans and families. You can find out more about our work at Bayeux by visiting the link in the comments.

What should a memorial look like when living memory fades?

At Brookwood, internationally acclaimed landscape architect Tom Stuart-Smith reflects on this very question. His approach considers how commemoration will evolve over time โ€” creating a space that feels natural, reflective, and enduring.

This week marks Volunteersโ€™ Week, the international celebration of the work that volunteers carry out for organisations all over the world.

We are privileged to have almost 3000 volunteers globally who carry out a range of roles to support the organisation, ranging from operational roles to engaging with the public and carrying out research.

This Volunteers' Week, we are delighted to share a selection of stories about our volunteering community. ๐Ÿ‘‰ Check out the link below.

Weโ€™re pioneering a new approach to landscape design at Medjez-El-Bab War Cemetery in Tunisia โ€“ part of our wider work to future-proof our sites for a changing climate.

It was great to be on site last week with the project team and landscape architect Joe Perkins Design, checking in on progress at Medjez.

At over 19,000 mยฒ, this is a significant site. The new design will reduce irrigated turf by 85%, using drought-tolerant planting to cut water consumption while maintaining the siteโ€™s dignity and character.

At the heart of the scheme are productive species with strong cultural and local ties โ€“ including pomegranate, olive and citrus โ€“ creating a landscape that reflects the region and remains meaningful for all who visit. Follow on social media as we will bring more from this incredible site in the coming weeks.
