An Update on the Llynfi Valley Route.

Very slowly, a small group of us – local residents and campaigners - have been continuing to push the case for developing an Active Travel Route along the length of the Llynfi valley from Maesteg to Tondu, which will provide a safe route for cyclists and walkers.
Progress has been glacially slow, but we do not give up easily! We’re in this for the long haul, but we still need your support. The more voices we have to support this, the more likely we are to get progress quicker.

To create a new Active Travel route, a lot of work needs to be done by the local authority and consultants to identify possible route options, engage with the public, do costings, identify sources of possible funds (it is expensive) and so on. This is called the Weltag process.

The good news is that this has been underway for some time. The first stage of the Weltag process is now completed. The second stage is under way.

Summary of the Weltag 1 stage – already completed.

This explored the Strategic Outline Case (SOC) for developing an active travel route between Maesteg and Tondu, specifically connecting the settlements of Maesteg, Llangynwyd, and Tondu, along the Llynfi Valley.

The Strategic Case set out the case for improving active travel infrastructure between Maesteg, Llangynwyd, and Tondu, based on a review of existing conditions, identification of issues and constraints and opportunities identified from the Stakeholders’ Workshops and the Bridgend County Borough Council (BCBC) Active Travel consultation. Five SMART objectives were developed, as follows:

1. Create an active travel route between Maesteg Comprehensive School and Tondu, connecting Llangynwyd and NCN route 4 and 885.

2. Create a high-quality, low maintenance active travel route using durable low carbon footprint materials, with a minimal impact on ecology, or landscape.

3. Improve active travel safety and personal security of all road users.

4. Increase access via an integrated network of multi-modal transport to key trip attractors, including new residential developments, schools, and employment sites.

5. Promote healthy lifestyles, improve air quality and decarbonise transport by encouraging a modal shift towards inclusive active travel accessible to all.

Summary of the Weltag 2 stage – work in progress.

Consultants have been commissioned by Bridgend council to carry out the Weltag 2 study and progress so far is as below:

1. An ecological survey has been carried out and result are currently being analysed. A mini report will form part of the appendix to the WelTAG report

2. Other aspects of the Study are in progress

3. A stakeholder engagement meeting will be held in the new year, most likely a date before mid-February. All stakeholders will be notified of date well in advance.

4. Just for information, this study is being funded partly by active travel grant (about 1/3rd ), and S106 contribution (2/3rd) from the paper mill development.

HOW YOU CAN HELP RIGHT NOW!

Add your name to our campaign! Your voice will add to the momentum to get this Active Travel route into the council’s plans and funding sooner than later. We really need lots of people to add their support. So as well as yourself, get your friends and family to add their names too! We will also keep you informed of any further developments, including the stakeholder and public engagement in Spring 2023.

Remember, low support from the public means less likelihood of this succeeding. Big support means it helps the local council make the case for funding to Welsh Government and others. So we need hundreds of people to show their support. Do it now, join our campaign, and let’s get this Llynfi Active Travel Route off the drawing board and make it happen for real.

Add your name to our campaign by clicking on the link below. or just send us a DM with your name, address and email. Thank you!

PLEASE SUBMIT YOUR COMMENTS TO THIS ACTIVE TRAVEL CONSULTATION

Apparently the response from Bridgend and Ogmore to this consultation in our area - others are being carried out in many parts of Wales - has been pretty poor so far.

So could you please complete this yourselves, and share with others who have an interest in cycling and walking too. Let's not miss the chance to get our voices heard.

Many thanks!

Just a brief update, as it’s been a long time since we posted. There’s been a lot of discussions with the council and Active Travel officers, a lot of time spent pushing options forward (and getting pushed back).

I know how Sisyphus feels now (nothing like a good bit of classical allusions on a Friday evening). However, we’re not giving up!

In fact, a bit of good news. As an off-shoot of the planning permission for the extension of the paper mills near Llangynwyd, some money has been put aside for feasibility work on extending cycle routes in the Llynfi, to be match/funded by Welsh Government.

We’ll ask the local authority for an update on this, and post it here so all can see.

Keep safe and well everyone.

August 2019 Update on Llynfi Safe Cycle/Walking Route

Back in the Spring and Summer of 2018, we had some really productive meetings involving Sustrans and the Active Travel Officer from Bridgend County Borough Council, and local people who wanted to see the development of a safe cycle and walking route along the Llynfi.

The discussions focussed on building on the existing routes in the upper Llynfi (from Caerau through Maesteg) with an aim to extend the route from Garth to Llangynwyd in the first instance, and subsequently with the longer-term ambition is to scope a route further down the valley to Tondu and to link up with the wider Bridgend network and the National Cycle Path NC4. This remains our ambition, even though we recognise that identifying and developing a route along the lower Llynfi has greater challenges to overcome.

However, we hit a major stumbling block when the expertise of the Active Travel Officer Matt was lost to us (to become Active Travel officer with Transport for Wales – great for them, but a big loss for us!) and this took the momentum out of our plans.

But we now want to crack on again, with your help.

We have asked the local authority to work with us by holding a meeting where interested people can show their support, and contribute their ideas for a safer cycling and walking route along the Llynfi valley.

If you are interested in attending such a meeting (so we can get an idea of possible numbers) could you please like this post, and share with others.

Thanks for your continued support, and please spread the word!

Please help spread the word on this. It would be great to see some uptake from local schools. This requires two key things: firstly, the investment in safe-route/Active Travel infrastructure; secondly, the will to work with the school community to make it happen.

There are parts of the Llynfi where the infrastructure is already in place. If there are parents/governors/head-teachers who are interested, we can help with further information and support on taking this approach forward.

The benefits of lowering traffic congestion and air pollution around schools are clear, but moreover, the wider health benefits for our children are significant. Have a read of the article to see how one particular school - Ysgol Hamydryad - is leading the way, and how they overcame obstacles to make it work.

A school is leading the way to make the daily commute better for the environment and for health.

LLYNFI SAFE CYCLE AND WALKING ROUTE UPDATE: you may know already that Bridgend County Borough Council has agreed to an “aspirational” Active Travel route for safe walking and cycling along the length of the Llynfi valley, joining up the existing routes from Caerau and Maesteg to Llangynwyd, and eventually to Tondu (meeting National Cycle Path No 2 (NC2).

This is fantastic news, and the fact this now features in their forward planning is a tribute to the constructive lobbying we’ve been doing for some time. It’s also thanks to Matt of Bridgend Council (who has now left to join Transport for Wales) and the support of local Sustrans officers.

BUT WE NEED YOUR HELP TO INCREASE THE CHANCES OF THIS HAPPENING SOONER RATHER THAN LATER.

I will be posting an update shortly on this page of a meeting before the summer with officers of Bridgend County Borough Council, where we can plot out the opportunities and the challenges.

MUCH OF THIS WILL DEPEND ON THE LEVEL OF PUBLIC SUPPORT.

So I’m asking to you share this far and wide to friends and family up and down the Llynfi Valley, from top to bottom, and the valleys gateways areas, and across Bridgend AND ASK THEM TO LIKE THIS PAGE SO THEY WILL GET AN UPDATE ON THAT MEETING BEFORE THE SUMMER.

We need the support of everyone who wants to see a seamless safe walking and cycling route along the Llynfi valley. This will not happen without big support. So please spread the word far and wide.

LATEST UPDATE

Based on the messages of support we have had on this page, and the many likes, I have written to BCBC to ask them to note the support and to ensure that the Llynfi Route figures in the finalised Active Travel Plan. We now wait and hold our breath .... Meanwhile, we have set up a Cross-Party Active Travel group in the Senedd, aiming to promote safe cycling and walking in line with the Welsh Government aims. From high policy, to practical measures such as the Llynfi Safe Cycle Route, we'll keep pushing. Finally, if we do get the Llynfi Route into the Bridgend Active Travel Plan, could you comment on this message to let me know if you'd want to get together to discuss the way forward. It could be one evening or weekend afternoon in a friendly local hostelry! Thanks, Huw

Nearly 70 people have already indicated their support for the inclusion of a full length safe cycle-path along the Llynfi Valley, by commenting on our liking this post. But please can you help us get it over a hundred by this Friday when the council "Active Travel" consultation closes, by adding your name, and sharing it and encouraging others to add their support to by liking or commenting. Many thanks!

LLYNFI VALLEY CYCLE ROUTE FEATURES IN ACTIVE TRAVEL CONSULTATION!

BUT YOU NEED TO LET US KNOW YOUR SUPPORT NOW.

Great news, as Bridgend County Borough Council (BCBC) have identified a provisional route all along the Llynfi from top to toe, joining up with existing routes, as an "aspirational route" in their current consultation on Active Travel plans (to encourage cycling and walking).

An "aspirational" route is just that: no more than an aspiration to deliver a safe cycling.walking route IF funds can be secured in future. This is a long way from making it happen, but it is an essential first step. So it is BRILLIANT news that following our effective lobbying, encouragement and passion for this cycling and walking route that BCBC are on board with the idea.

But now we need your help. If you want to see a safe Llynfi Cycle/Walk route along the length of the Llynfi valley, then don't sit back and wait for it to happen. We need you to do one simple thing right now.

SEND US A SIMPLE MESSAGE RIGHT NOW, IN RESPONSE TO THIS POST, OR VIA A DIRECT MESSAGE, SHOWING YOUR SUPPORT FOR A SAFE CYCLE AND WALKING ROUTE ALONG THE LLYNFI VALLEY.

We will then add your name to a list we'll forward to the local authority. Do it now please, as the consultation closes soon. Here is a link to the local authorities proposals across the whole of Bridgend (see maps on page 7 and 8 for lower Llynfi "aspirational route" in pink dots)

Would you like to see a Safe Cycle Route extended down the Llynfi valley, especially along the Cwmfelin to Tondu section where there is no safe route at all, and joining up with the established safe cycle routes in Maesteg and Caerau?

Are you interested enough to come and discuss this one evening, or possibly even to help as part of a small group to take this forward? We'll need people who will support this through petitions etc but we'll also need a few really committed and enthusiastic people who will stick with this to help see it through. It's going to take a lot of work, and we could at it for some time. But any long-ride starts with the first spin of the pedals!

So please comment on here if you are interested in supporting this campaign, or being part of a small working group to help take this forward. Let's see if there is enough real interest to get this going!
