We had the absolute pleasure of celebrating Community Rail Week (Community Rail Network) yesterday with the presentation of two new displays at Criccieth railway station! ๐ŸŽ‰ ๐Ÿš‰

The event marked the completion of two community-led projects, made possible thanks to funding from Transport for Wales Trafnidiaeth Cymru to deliver our Railway200 Community Grant Fund.

The first addition to the station platform is a large wooden steam train ๐Ÿš‚ ๐Ÿชต, built by the Criccieth Menโ€™s Shed ๐Ÿ› ๏ธ and designed and decorated by the Crefftwyr Cricieth/Criccieth Crafters, who covered the installation with hand-knitted and crocheted woollen patterns ๐Ÿงถ. Cricieth yn ei Blodau - Criccieth in Bloom ๐ŸŒธ have also converted one of the wooden carriages into a planter, displaying a beautiful variety of perennial flowers! ๐ŸŒบ๐Ÿชด

The second addition is a new historical exhibition titled โ€˜Potted Thyme Lineโ€™ ๐Ÿ•ฐ๏ธ. Created by Cricieth yn ei Blodau - Criccieth in Bloom in collaboration with local school pupils and community groups, the exhibition draws on historic photographs ๐Ÿ“ธ, press cuttings ๐Ÿ“ฐ, and archival material ๐Ÿ“œ to trace the railwayโ€™s development in the town between 1865 and 1869.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank the groups and local community who have dedicated so much time and passion to creating these wonderful displays, which will be appreciated and admired by so many ๐Ÿ’– ๐Ÿ™Œ.

A special thanks goes to Criccieth Town Council Chair, Cllr Delyth Lloyd ๐ŸŽ–๏ธ, who formally marked the completion of both projects on behalf of the town ๐Ÿ‘ ๐Ÿ—ฃ๏ธ and Idris Cafe for the fantastic cakes we all enjoyed afterwards.

Llwyngwril's dragon-themed yarn bombing ๐Ÿงถ

Deb visited Llwyngwril to take receipt of a new planter for the station (more of that to come later this week) and to meet long-standing, Transport for Wales Trafnidiaeth Cymru volunteer Station Adopter, Pam, and her lovely black and tan terrier, Bryn.

Pam took Deb on a tour of the village to see this year's incredible dragon-themed yarn bombing. It is amazing to see the amount of work that goes into creating these spectacular pieces of art every year. This community project is run entirely by volunteers who lovingly hand make every piece to raise funds for the village hall.

As a Community Rail Partnership we love celebrating local stories like these, especially during Community Rail Week (Community Rail Network) and Volunteers' Week. A big thank you to our volunteers who help create welcoming and inclusive stations for passengers and the local community.

Last week we spent a very busy day at Shrewsbury railway station, supporting the new station volunteers in adding some colour to the platform ๐ŸŒธ ๐Ÿชด

It was especially nice to share this experience with two other Community Rail Officers and Partnerships - Owen from the Heart of Wales Line and Josie from 3 Counties Connected Community Rail Partnership.

A very rewarding day for everyone involved and we hope passengers enjoy the new floral displays.

Local and Community History Month ๐Ÿ“ Cadw Castell y Bere

To protect his invaluable royal herds and the southern border of Gwynedd, Prince Llywelyn the Great built the magnificent Castell y Bere in 1221. This rocky outpost in the Dysynni Valley was so critical that Llywelyn actually seized the land from his own son to build it!

Despite its remote setting, this sprawling fortress was an architectural marvel:

๐Ÿฐ Ahead of its time: It featured a highly elaborate entrance with rock-cut ditches, twin gate-towers, and drawbridges, a design unmatched in Wales and technologically advanced even by English standards.
๐Ÿฐ Classic Welsh architecture: The South Tower utilised a distinctive apsidal (elongated D-shaped) layout, serving as a massive keep.

Captured by King Edward I in 1283, the castle was meant to anchor a new English frontier town. The town never materialised, and the fortress was permanently abandoned during a Welsh uprising in 1294. Today, it remains just as wild and beautiful as it was 800 years ago.
