🏖️ 👮🏽 Op California – Itemisers used to detect traces of illegal substances such as co***ne.
Summer brings unique policing challenges to our coastal towns, as visitor numbers swell to around 250,000 visitors a day. The scale and complexity of challenges increase dramatically.
We adopt proactive approaches to try to prevent crime before it happens but aim to be ready to respond when it does.
In addition to extensive safety information displayed throughout caravan parks, venues, shops, and kiosks, one of the initiatives that we adopt during the evenings is using a machine called an ‘itemiser’.
We install a machine at a venue, and it detects traces of substances such as co***ne and other illegal drugs by swabbing the hands of people before they enter.
On Saturday 15 August, Neighbourhood Policing Sergeant Katie Moore and team set up at Busters and the Jolly Fisherman in Skegness. Over 200 people were swabbed. Readings indicated the presence of substances such as co***ne, morphine, and methamphetamine. Those who tested positive for traces of illegal substances throughout the evening were spoken to by officers as part of a proactive engagement and safeguarding approach, with some offered advice and support where appropriate.
Four people were searched during the evening, with one person found in possession of a small amount of co***ne. The drugs were seized and the individual agreed to a community resolution. Importantly, they were also able to have a conversation with a member of the Lincolnshire Recovery Partnership who was out with us, demonstrating how partnership working can help provide both enforcement and support.
The machine was really well received by staff and the public. A lot of visitors commented that they had never seen it before and thought it was a great initiative that should be used more often and in more locations.
🗣️ Sergeant Moore said: “By identifying drug use and possession using these machines in busy areas, we aim to reduce anti-social behaviour and violent crime. It acts as both a deterrent and engagement tool, helping us identify drug misuse, connect people with support services where needed, and keep public spaces safe for residents and visitors alike.”
