INTRODUCTION: Lytham St. Annes is a municipal borough that includes the towns of St. Annes-on-Sea, Lytham and the districts of Ansdell and Fairhaven. This is confusing for visitors who think Lytham St. Annes is one town. St. Annes and Lytham both have their own town centres and railway stations. Ansdell and Fairhaven are districts of Lytham, situated between St. Annes and Lytham. Fairhaven is seaward of the railway line and Ansdell is inward. Ansdell has a small shopping centre and is the location of the “Ansdell & Fairhaven” railway station.

Contrary to current popular belief, St. Annes was always considered more upmarket than its immediate neighbour Lytham. Years ago, if you wanted to appear to be from wealthy stock, you said you lived in St. Annes. Times have changed though and Lytham is now considered more wealthy with more expensive house prices.

Lytham is famous for Lytham Green and its Windmill but if you’re looking for a sandy beach you need to go down the road to St. Annes where you’ll find a Victorian Pier and an expansive beach.

THE FYLDE: St. Annes & Lytham are on the Fylde Coast. The Fylde is a coastal plain in western Lancashire, England. It is roughly a 13-mile square-shaped peninsula, bounded by Morecambe Bay to the north, the Ribble estuary to the south, the Irish Sea to the west, and the Bowland hills to the east. The eastern boundary is approximately the location of the M6 motorway. Fylde is pronounced as ‘filed’ ; it derives from a Scandinavian word for ‘field’. About 900AD the Fylde was subject to a huge wave of immigration by Vikings. These were Irish-Norse Vikings and had been expelled from Dublin. They crossed the Irish Sea forming new fishing, farming and trading communities in Lancashire and Cumbria.

ST. ANNES-ON-SEA: A Victorian planned seaside town, officially founded on 31st March 1875. The name of Saint Anne’s-on-the-Sea has evolved over the years to become St. Annes-on-Sea; used for a postal address but verbally locals just refer to it as St. Annes. The towns of St. Annes-on-Sea and Lytham combined as the municipal borough of Lytham St. Annes on 1st May 1922.

LYTHAM: Lytham was founded around 600 BC. As ‘Lidun’ it was mentioned in the Domesday Book of 1086. For many centuries the economy of the hamlet of Lytham was dependent on fishing and sh*****ng, until the advent of tourism and seaside health cures. The districts of Ansdell and Fairhaven are part of Lytham. The towns of St. Annes-on-Sea and Lytham combined as the municipal borough of Lytham St. Annes on 1st May 1922.

BOUNDARY: The boundary between St. Annes and Lytham runs from St. Paul’s Avenue (near Fairhaven Lake), across the Royal Lytham & St. Annes Golf Course, along the side of LSA Technology and Performing Arts College (a community school previously known as Lytham St. Annes High School and founded as Ansdell Secondary Modern), along Smithy Lane and then up North Houses Lane meandering to Division Lane / Squires Gate Lane.

CYPRESS POINT: A relatively new development. Newcomers to the area living at Cypress Point are often confused as to whether it is in St. Annes or Lytham. It is in Ansdell which is part of Lytham, although it is very close to the border of St. Annes on Heyhouses Lane. In the old days it was called Lytham West. It is next to Lytham Park Cemetery which opened in 1927, not long after the borough of Lytham St. Annes was created. The Crematorium, situated within the Cemetery, opened in 1958. The Cemetery and Cypress Point are within Lytham Parkland, land once owned by the Clifton family. Lytham Hall, the Clifton family seat, is also within Lytham Parkland.

SANDGROWN’UN: If you were born in Lytham or St. Annes you were ’grown in the sand’ and so you are a “Sandgrown’un”. A lovely local term for folk born in any of the seaside towns on the north west coast of England. Those that live in one of the seaside towns but weren’t born there are an “Incomer” and those that visit are a “Blow-in”.. blown in by the wind 💨

LYTHAM ST. ANNES: If you enter St. Annes or Lytham online it often automatically defaults to ‘Lytham St. Annes’ which can add to the confusion for visitors or newcomers. It is correct and the postal address for any property in St. Annes or Lytham, including the areas of Ansdell and Fairhaven, can simply be * ROAD, LYTHAM ST. ANNES as that covers the whole borough. However the address could also be more specific..

For example, for an address in the Ansdell district you could use * ROAD, ANSDELL, LYTHAM, LYTHAM ST. ANNES (Ansdell is within Lytham, Lytham is within Lytham St. Annes), ditto for Fairhaven. However, locally born folk tend to use the simpler address of Lytham and don’t include the prefix of Ansdell or Fairhaven.

Likewise for an address in St. Annes you could use * ROAD, ST. ANNES-ON-SEA, LYTHAM ST. ANNES (St. Annes is within Lytham St. Annes), ditto for Lytham. Again, locally born folk tend to use the simpler address of St. Annes-on-Sea or Lytham. They tend not to use ’Lytham St. Annes’ at all as Sandgrown’un’s are very loyal to their town of St. Annes or Lytham and prefer to differentiate. ‘Lytham St. Annes’ tends to be a term used by Incomers and Blow-ins (Visitors).

ROYAL LYTHAM & ST. ANNES GOLF CLUB: The name of the Royal Lytham & St Annes Golf Club often gets shortened to “Royal Lytham” which confuses visitors as the Clubhouse is in St. Annes as is much of the course. However the southern end of the course is in Ansdell which is part of Lytham; so the golf course is in both towns, hence the inclusion of ‘and’ in the name. The Club was founded in 1886 and the present course constructed in 1897 prior to the creation of the municipal borough of Lytham St. Annes.

There are 3 other Golf Clubs in the borough; St. Annes Old Links Golf Club, Fairhaven Golf Club and Lytham Green Drive Golf Club.
