No sooner had I mentioned about no wind then someone sent us this picture of the weather forecast for Friday afternoon! So, I thought I’d come on here and put you in the picture about how we actually judge the wind at the festival.

Here’s roughly how it goes:

🌬️ Under 5mph: We’re struggling. There simply isn’t enough wind for most of the kites.

🌬️ 5–12mph: Perfect! This is the sweet spot and when everyone can really relax and put on a great show.

🌬️ 12–20mph: Still fine, but there’s no relaxing! The kites need more attention and the flyers have to work harder.

🌬️ 20–30mph: Now we’re struggling. Most of the fun has given way to concern. We’ll fly low to the ground, the long, thin things like tails and snakes, while the sports kite flyers will generally switch to fully vented kites.

🌬️ 30mph+: Game over! At that point the winds can become destructive and it’s simply not possible to fly safely.

So, if this forecast turns out to be exactly right, we would simply delay the start of the festival until around 3pm, when hopefully the wind will have eased.

Trust me, everyone wants to put on a show — but many of the big display kites cost £thousands, and there’s absolutely no fun in watching the wind tear them to pieces! 😱

Hopefully this gives you a better idea of what we’re looking at when we’re watching the forecast. So, keep an eye on the wind and you’ll understand a little more about why we sometimes have to change things at short notice.
