I'm proud to be .

This Social Mobility Day, I'm joining the 93% Club's campaign to celebrate the experiences, opportunities, challenges and people that have shaped my journey.

Like 93% of people in the UK, I went to a state school, Lliswerry High School, and it shaped the person I am today. Despite the challenges our school community faced, the teachers created an environment where we felt supported and encouraged.

They gave us far more than an education—they instilled confidence and self-belief. And I know for many of my friends and classmates, that belief became the foundation for the careers and lives we've gone on to build.

Here in the Forest, I've worked closely with our young people, and seen for myself the talent, ambition and potential they have. Our state schools are providing exceptional opportunities and helping ensure that every pathway is wide open.

From a state school classroom to being elected as your MP, I'm proud to represent what is possible when young people have great teachers, strong support and positive role models around them.

I am proud to be and to join the 93% Club in celebrating the people, careers and opportunities that our state schools help shape every day.

A team of us were out this week chatting to parents, students and residents in Cinderford.

We will do all we can to ensure children in the Forest of Dean are not left behind.

Let’s keep going and do all we can to save Forest High School—share far and wide!

As part of Labour's Great British Summer Savings, VAT is being cut from 20% to 5% on family activities this summer, easing pressure on household budgets, and helping families enjoy time together.

This summer, families will pay less for days out, meals and travel.

☀️ VAT cut from 20% to 5% on eligible family activities
🚌 Free local bus travel in England for children aged 5–15 throughout August
🎟️ Cheaper tickets for cinemas, theatres, attractions and more
🍽️ Lower costs for children’s meals in restaurants

Labour is helping families enjoy summer for less.

Earlier this week, the Chancellor announced new support to help families with the cost of living.

I regularly hear from residents who are worried about rising household bills, food prices and the general pressure on everyday finances. These measures will provide extra support and help ease those pressures over the summer months.

Here are some of the measures announced:

⛽️No increase in fuel duty this year — helping keep petrol and diesel costs down.

🚍Free bus travel in August for children aged 5–15 across England.

🎟️VAT cut from 20% to 5% on many summer activities, including cinemas, theme parks, zoos, museums and children’s meals in cafes and restaurants during the school holidays.

💷A 10p increase in tax-free mileage rates for people who drive for work, including carers and tradespeople.

🛒Tariffs removed on over 100 food products to help reduce supermarket prices.

My office is always here to help residents across the Forest of Dean access support and assistance where needed.

If you need help or advice relating to any of these measures, or support accessing help available to you, please contact me at [email protected]

Three of us have been out this evening in Littledean, chatting with residents on the doorstep about the issues that matter most to them—both locally and nationally.

It’s always really valuable to hear people’s concerns, ideas, and priorities directly, and great to be out and about in the community.

We rounded off the evening with a quick drink at the Belfry 🍻 We’ll be back out on doorsteps across the Forest of Dean each week!
