Dungeness RNLI launches to yacht with no power near shipping lanes.

In the early hours of Sunday 14 June, the volunteers of Dungeness RNLI launched the Shannon class lifeboat The Morrell to aid a yacht drifting in the English Channel.

The 20ft yacht was seen on radar in the vicinity of Littlestone bay and Dungeness and was drifting in circles towards one of the busiest shipping lanes in the world.

The lifeboat launched at 2.05am and made best speed to the location, arriving at 2.31am.

Once on scene, the lifeboat made contact with the solo sailor who was very fatigued and a lifeboat crew member was put aboard the yacht.

It was established that the yachtโ€™s engine had failed and the sails were unusable. The sailor was also unable to call for assistance as their VHF radio had failed.

Volunteer Coxswain, Mark Richardson, says:

'We carefully assessed whether establishing a tow was the best course of action to rescue the casualty. In the absence of a more suitable vessel and given the yachtโ€™s condition and the risk of drifting into the shipping lane, it was determined that towing the yacht to Dover was the best course of action.โ€™

The lifeboat towed the yacht to safety at Dover Marina, arriving at 5.40am then returned to station and was made ready for service at 7.00am.

If you are interested in volunteering at Dungeness RNLI, we have a number of opportunities available, no maritime experience needed. Contact [email protected] or 01797 320317 for more information.

Today, our thoughts are with the families, friends, and colleagues of Bill Ewen and Frank Petsch of Marine Rescue New South Wales, Australia, who tragically lost their lives in Ballina last month while serving their community.

Alongside the International Maritime Rescue Federation (IMRF) and search and rescue organisations around the world, all RNLI stations will fly the flag at half-mast on Monday 15th June in their memory.

Bill and Frankโ€™s ultimate sacrifice is a powerful reminder of the courage, dedication, and selflessness shown every day by those who answer the call to save lives at sea. Their commitment to helping others will never be forgotten.

As we join the international search and rescue community in paying tribute, we honour not only Bill and Frankโ€™s service but also the unwavering dedication of all maritime search and rescue personnel who put themselves at risk for the safety of others.

Rest in peace, Bill and Frank. Your service, courage, and sacrifice will always be remembered. ๐Ÿ’™

A huge congratulations to our volunteer Maria Bull, who has taken on an additional role as Family Support Volunteer at Dungeness Lifeboat Station! ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‘

Maria also dedicates her time on the boat crew and is working on her Tier 2 training plan alongside being a mother and grandmother. โš“๏ธ

She will now undertake some additional training to help her support the families of our volunteer crew.

Well done Maria! ๐Ÿ˜ƒ
