We’re excited to update you on the progress of our pledge to Tree Nation, a global initiative to combat deforestation and support reforestation efforts around the world.

Here’s what we’ve achieved this month:

Number of Trees Planted: 202
Location of Planting Projects: Mkussu Forest Project, Tanzania.
Environmental Impact: 20,200kg CO2 Captured
Tree Species: Bruguiera Gymnorhiza

This month’s contribution takes our total to 2,385 trees covering 22,600sqm. This number of trees absorb approximately 178.24 tonnes of CO2 during their lifetime.

Every tree we plant helps in the fight against climate change supports biodiversity and restores ecosystems. We’re committed to making a positive environmental impact, and we look forward to sharing more updates with you next month as we continue to grow this important initiative.

CocoTurf has been installed in the new Nature and Wellbeing Garden at Ashton Gate in , creating a space for supporters and visitors to sit and relax before matches and events.

Home to Bristol City Football Club and Bristol Bears Rugby, Ashton Gate Stadium welcomes thousands of people throughout the year. The new garden provides a quieter communal area outside the stadium, giving fans somewhere to meet and spend time before heading inside.

With the emphasis on nature and wellbeing, CocoTurf was an ideal choice for the space. Made entirely from natural materials, CocoTurf uses coconut fibre yarns, a jute backing and natural latex. It contains no plastic fibres, microplastics or PFAS, providing a natural alternative to conventional synthetic grass.

Its appearance also works particularly well within the garden, helping to create a softer setting, while still providing a practical surface for a busy public area.

CocoTurf has already been used in playgrounds and recreational spaces around the UK, but the installation shows how it can work equally well in landscaped and communal areas.

Duncan Bennett, said: “It’s great to see CocoTurf being used at Ashton Gate, and the Nature and Wellbeing Garden is a perfect setting for it.

“The aim is to give supporters somewhere they can sit, relax and enjoy being outdoors before a game. CocoTurf fits really well with that idea and, for us, it’s another exciting use for the product.”

The project is another high-profile installation for CocoTurf and a great example of how the surface can be used outside traditional play and sports environments.

For and supporters, the result is simply a pleasant place to meet and enjoy some time before heading into the stadium.

How hot is the surface beneath their feet?

With the UK continuing to experience warm weather, it’s worth thinking about more than just the temperature in the air — especially when it comes to the spaces where children play.

Independent heat refraction testing found that CocoTurf with sand infill reached a maximum surface temperature of 52.4°C, compared with 65.0°C for wetpour rubber. That’s a difference of more than 12°C.

Made with natural coconut fibres and combined with sand infill, CocoTurf helps create a cooler surface underfoot while offering a more sustainable choice for playgrounds.

Because when children are busy playing, the surface beneath their feet matters.

Shaw Ridge Park in West Swindon has been transformed into a vibrant, inclusive play destination, providing local families with a modern space where children can climb, explore, imagine and play in a safe and stimulating environment.

Commissioned by West Swindon Parish Council, the redevelopment replaces an ageing playground with a contemporary facility designed to inspire active outdoor play for children of all ages and abilities. The new play area creates an engaging community asset that encourages physical activity, social interaction and imaginative play while providing a welcoming space for families to enjoy throughout the year.

The scheme was designed by HAGS and installed by Groundwork & Leisure Services, with Notts Sport supplying its NottsSward artificial grass safety surfacing. Together, the project team has delivered an attractive, durable and accessible play environment that blends seamlessly into its natural surroundings.

The playground features an exciting range of equipment designed to challenge and engage children, including climbing towers, slides, rope play, swings, balancing features and a zip wire. Inclusive play equipment ensures children of different ages and abilities can enjoy the space, creating opportunities for everyone to develop confidence, coordination and social skills through play.

Throughout the play area, Notts Sport’s NottsSward safety surfacing provides a high-quality finish that combines excellent impact protection with the natural appearance of grass. Specifically developed for busy public play environments, NottsSward offers outstanding durability, helping the playground withstand intensive daily use while maintaining its appearance and performance. Its low-maintenance characteristics and year-round usability ensure the facility remains welcoming and accessible for the community in every season.

Alongside the new play facilities, the wider redevelopment has been carefully planned to enhance the surrounding landscape. Existing wildflower meadows have been retained wherever possible, with additional planting introduced to increase biodiversity and create an attractive setting that balances recreation with environmental responsibility. The result is a play space that not only encourages children to connect with nature but also contributes positively to the long-term sustainability of the park.

Shaw Ridge Park demonstrates the value of collaboration between client, designer, installer and specialist surfacing supplier. By combining innovative play equipment with premium safety surfacing and thoughtful landscape design, the project has created a destination that will benefit local families for many years to come.

As communities continue to invest in modern outdoor spaces that promote healthier lifestyles and inclusive play, Shaw Ridge Park stands as an excellent example of how carefully considered design and quality materials can transform a public park into a vibrant hub for recreation, wellbeing and community life.

As this video from The Guardian highlights, the temperature of playground surfaces is becoming an increasingly important consideration during periods of hot weather.

As summers become warmer, creating outdoor spaces that remain safe, comfortable and enjoyable for children is a challenge the industry can't ignore. At Notts Sport, we've been researching this issue through the development of CocoTurf—our natural coconut fibre playground surface.

Independent testing by Sports Labs Ltd, using FIFA Test Method 14, found that CocoTurf recorded the lowest surface temperature of the six systems tested, reaching 52.4°C, compared with 69.8°C for artificial turf with SBR rubber infill. A reduction of more than 17°C demonstrates how material choice can have a significant impact on surface temperatures.

As highlighted by The Guardian and recent research from Greenpeace UK, heat build-up on outdoor surfaces is an issue that's receiving increasing attention. We believe innovative, natural materials have an important role to play in creating more climate-resilient playgrounds for the future.

A great piece by The Guardian and Kirsty Major for helping to raise awareness of this important topic.
