On the 18th we will be opening the garden gate to visitors on a Friday!

On 18th September we are excited to be particpating in Englands largest heritage festival - and entrance is absolutely FREE! Join us between 11am and 3pm, wander through the garden and its historic service buildings, visit the Bedfordshire Archives in the Conservatory, have some thing delicious and a hot drink within the garden walls, or add a stop for lunch at the Woodyard Brasserie (booking reccommended). This year we will be remembering all those who have been influenced by the Walled Garden and some of the staff and volunteers of the Walled Garden Project will be dressing in the fashion of that day in order to 'tip our hat' in their direction. Pop by to see the garden ... and us, on a rarely available Friday!

2027 Season Tickets are now on sale!

And there’s an added bonus — you can start using them immediately, with free access to the garden every Wednesday throughout September 2026.

At just £20, the season ticket gives you entry throughout the 2027 open season — normally £7.50 per person, per visit. That’s great value, especially if you’re planning to visit regularly.

Your entry also includes a fascinating guided tour of the garden, with new tours being added throughout the open season, so there’s always something new to discover.

They also make lovely Christmas or birthday presents — a chance to enjoy a little piece of history right on your doorstep, week after week.

And, of course, there’s always time for a tea, coffee and a treat within the garden walls, or lunch at Wooyard Brasserie.

Pick up your 2027 Season Ticket at the garden gate next Wednesday and make the most of the extra 2026 dates we’ve added.

What happens in a garden after a long drought?
After weeks of parched soil and thirsty plants, a garden can look as though it has simply pressed the pause button. But underground, a great deal has been happening.
Plants respond to drought by closing tiny pores in their leavesto reduce water loss. Growth slows, roots may venture deeper in search of moisture, and some plants retreat into a kind of botanical holding pattern.
Then comes the rain.
As the soil begins to rehydrate, roots can start taking up water and nutrients again. Soil microorganisms spring back into action, decomposing organic matter and releasing nutrients. Seeds that have been patiently waiting may germinate, while bulbs, perennials and dormant buds begin their quiet comeback.
But recovery isn't always instant. Very dry soil can become water-repellent, causing rain to run off rather than soak in. Some plants bounce back remarkably quickly; others have suffered damage that only becomes apparent weeks later. And a sudden downpour after drought can bring its own challenges, from erosion to stressed roots.
So when you walk through an old garden after rain, you're not just seeing plants getting wet. You're watching a whole soil-and-plant ecosystem reboot itself.

Yes, we have been experiencing a very dry, very hot summer, but there is still colour and life in the garden, not to mention beautiful and delicious produce in the shop, fascinating information on the tour, friendly faces from the volunteer project and shade under the trees (and tea/coffee and something delicious available inside the garden walls with lunch options available at the Woodyard Brasserie). Pop by and take some time out in the wonderful Walled Garden.
We are open from 10.30 and there is no need to pre book - £7.50 per person for all day entry and RHS and Historic Houses entry is free for card holders*

Open Wednesday at the Walled Garden and visitors pay £7.50 for an all day ticket. Entrance includes a fascinating tour and there is plenty of information insterspersed throughout the garden (or even a friendly face to help you with our richhistory or plant information) Freshly harvested produce (including our highly regarding single source Walled Garden honey) are available in the garden shop. Hot and cold drinks and perhaps something delicious available in within the walls of the garden, or wonderful lunches a short stroll through the Woodland Walk at the Woodyard Brasserie. No need to book - pay at the garden gate! With plenty of shady spots and beautiful vistas - that's Wednesday sorted!

Open from 10.30am–4.00pm, admission is just £7.50, which includes a fascinating guided tour researched, prepared and delivered by members of the Walled Garden Project. Discover the rich history of this remarkable garden while exploring its ever-changing borders, service buildings and historic features.

The garden is constantly evolving and, like gardens everywhere, has responded to this year's extreme weather, making every visit a little different.

Be sure to visit the Garden Shop for the produce of the day, including fresh soft fruit picked from the garden. There are plenty of shady spots to relax and enjoy delicious hot and cold drinks and light snacks available within the garden walls. If you're planning to make a day of it, why not book lunch at the Woodyard Brasserie?

Don't miss the magnificent Prop Houses, home to our impressive collection of melons, cucumbers, tomatoes, pelargoniums and cacti, or wander through the Vinery to see gourds growing before your eyes.

With free parking and a wealth of history right on your doorstep, it's the perfect midweek visit.

A Rare Friday Opening at the Walled Garden!

This Friday, we're delighted to be opening the Walled Garden for a very special National Garden Scheme (NGS) Open Day – and it's a rare opportunity, as the garden is not usually open on Fridays!

By visiting, you'll not only enjoy the beauty and tranquillity of the garden, but you'll also be supporting an incredible cause. Since 1927, the National Garden Scheme has donated almost £78 million to nursing, health and garden charities, including organisations such as Macmillan Cancer Support, Marie Curie, Hospice UK and Parkinson's UK. In 2025 alone, the NGS donated over £3.8 million to its beneficiary charities, helping thousands of people across the UK.

This brilliant clip is from the Walled Garden this morning. Have you ever spotted a hummingbird hawk-moth in an English country garden? ✨
Often mistaken for a tiny hummingbird, this fascinating moth flies by day, hovers effortlessly as it feeds on nectar, and beats its wings up to 80 times a second.

Even more amazing, many of the ones we see in Britain have migrated from southern Europe and North Africa!

A truly magical summer visitor—and a wonderful reminder to pause and enjoy the wildlife in our gardens. See them (possibly) at the Walled Garden next week on Open Wednesday 10.30 - 4.
