Sinn Féin councillor Paul Duffy has condemned a second night of violence in Portadown.

Councillor Duffy said:

“The scenes we have witnessed over the past two nights in Portadown are deeply disturbing and completely unacceptable.

These racist attacks and acts of disorder do not represent the values of our town or the vast majority of people who live here. Local businesses have suffered damage, families are frightened in their own homes, and our community is paying the price for the actions of a minority.

Like everyone else, we are appalled by the attempted murder of a man in Belfast and support efforts to bring those responsible to justice. However, there can be no justification for targeting people, homes or businesses on the basis of race or nationality.

Many young people are being caught up in this violence without fully considering the impact it is having on our community and on their own futures

The violence cannot continue for another night . Our community deserves safety, respect and
unity, not fear, division and hatred.”
