This is a photo of a resident in the old . Workhouses were where poor people and those unable to work due to illness or old age were looked after before the or existed. People who were deemed fit to work were found jobs in local firms and this meant their "wages" covered their cost of living. Today we often associate the workhouse with a very Dickensian image of poverty.
This photo dates from the century and this woman was one of the last residents in the . She had reached the very old age of 100 years old, when this photo was taken of a remarkable person towards the end of her life. She looks quite comfortable in this cosy chair, I imagine she could have told us some amazing tales from her long life.

Swallows are much smaller than their fellow migrants the . They also make cup shaped nests from which are often located along beams in barns or other buildings. You can also spot them lined up on phone wires in rural locations such as .

It's and this rather dates from the Late Eighteenth to early Nineteenth century. It's an evening waistcoat in a cream silk ground with black stripes. It's quite a subtle item, doesn't grab attention but is beautifully made, with false pockets at the front just for the look. It fastens with laces at the back for a perfect fit!

This gorgeous striped waistcoat would certainly have elevated the outfit of the who wore it. It's made from blue velvet and the long line of the cut is typical of the time, dating from 1800. Despite its age it is in remarkable condition, showing little signs of wear. I love the double row of coordinating covered buttons which really help the colours to pop.

in the mid Twentieth century, children from Galdeford school took part in a pageant. Here they are dressed up as a variety of characters from fantastical creatures such as fairies and elves, alongside more prosaic doctors and nurses! The photo was taken by T.J.Evans of Corves Street, Ludlow.
