🦊 Leonardslee After Dark | Part 2

The trail cameras are back — and this time, we’ve caught a fox exploring the gardens after dark. 🌙🌿

Foxes are mainly nocturnal and have incredibly good hearing, helping them locate prey even when it’s hidden beneath leaves or vegetation. As we move towards autumn, they’re also busy preparing for the colder months ahead, with their thicker winter coats beginning to develop. 🍂

Home to our beautiful fallow deer, the Deer Park offers a chance to slow down and observe these graceful animals in a peaceful woodland setting.

Recognisable by their distinctive white spots and white rump, fallow deer are a familiar sight here at Leonardslee. Take a moment to watch them grazing, browsing or simply enjoying the tranquillity of their surroundings.

🌿 Did You Know?

There’s more communication happening between the plants at Leonardslee than you might think…

Plants can release chemical signals into the air and soil when they’re stressed or under attack, which can alert nearby plants and encourage them to strengthen their own natural defences.

Eucalyptus trees are a fascinating example. When attacked by herbivores, they can release compounds called terpenes, which act as warning signals to neighbouring eucalyptus trees.

So next time you’re walking through the gardens, remember — the plants may be communicating in ways we can’t see! 🌱👀

Our Alpine House is home to a fascinating collection of alpine plants and species from warmer, drier climates, all thriving in carefully created conditions.

The Alpine House complements Sir Edmund Loder's vision for Leonardslee, where his passion for collecting unusual plants inspired features like the famous Rock Garden and helped shape the gardens we enjoy today.
