While we are sure we all want to watch the England game, our residents always come first.

We fully support Conservative leader, Deborah Taylor, in all her recent efforts to highlight the behaviour of Reform councillors at Leicestershire County Council that is not acceptable, and comes at great cost to local tax payers. It’s disappointing now then, to see that the standards of some Conservative councillors at LCC (including hers), have not been what we should expect either. Councillors are elected and paid to do a job. “Supporting England”, whilst worthy, should never take priority over our residents’ needs - particularly, when those residents include children with SEND and their families.

A brilliant statement from our MP

Keir Starmer helped make Labour electable again and gave us the chance to change this country. For that, I and the rest of the Labour Party are thankful.

He resigned today with dignity and grace. He spoke about how his government helped to change this country. Getting poverty down, improving workers’ rights, and helping to protect young people are just some of his many achievements.

On a personal level, I appreciate the opportunity he gave me to work as a PPS with the kind and brilliant team in the Department for Business and Trade.

Keir came into office during what is the most important parliament in almost a century. An affordability crisis, decades in the making, has now exploded, leaving many without hope. Turbocharged by tech-inspired hate and funded by crypto-billionaires, that frustration is now leading to far-right violence on our streets. As we can all feel this week, our planet is burning. War has come to Europe again.

It is for us to build on Keir’s successes. Making life affordable by getting bills down in the short term and creating good jobs in the longer term. Working with other nations to stop emitting carbon. Preventing a war in Europe by preparing for one, making it clear to Putin that he would lose to European NATO. Keir helped set the foundation for us to change this country.

We, as Labour MPs and a Labour government, have a unique opportunity to build a country true to our values. This may be a time of monsters, but we have the courage and determination to step up and build a stronger, united Britain where each of us can thrive.

We unite this country with our political vision – of strength in unity. For us in Labour, we know that the only way to ensure every person can live a decent life is through our common endeavour. This is drawn from our historic experience of a united Britain, whose people looked different but stood together to defeat fascism. And in this time of misunderstanding and angry tweets, our Britain is one where we offer grace toward one another.

We do not resile from the difficulties of today. We step up to them. We can, and we will, meet this moment.

Together we will build a better Britain. Divided we won’t.

Ten years ago today, our beloved friend and colleague, Jo Cox, was murdered.

Every day, we strive towards creating the world that she believed in, and remember her words:

“We are far more united and have far more in common than that which divides us".

When a resident told us in 2024 that Shelthorpe estate would be 100 years old in 2026, we knew we had to celebrate! We applied and won UK Shared Prosperity funding to host today's event, install CCTV at Shelly shops, and tidy up the shop area (still ongoing). We also bought a new noticeboard. Thanks to the Charnwood Borough Council teams who helped, Lift Beacon academy for hosting and everyone else who turned. At short notice Fodder and Flute agreed to provide some lovely food.
