"A leader is one who knows the way, goes the way, and shows the way."

Huge congratulations to Fg Off Wilson, who graduated from the Reserve Officer Initial Officer Training course at RAF College Cranwell last week and now rejoins the Squadron as it's newest officer!

The journey to earning the commission is a demanding one and his dedication, resilience, and commitment throughout this challenging training period have been outstanding.

The Squadron Commander and Training Officer, were privileged to attend both the graduation parade and the church service at Cranwell to witness this proud moment firsthand. The entire Squadron is incredibly proud of your achievement, Fg Off Wilson.

We are all looking forward to welcoming you back to the unit in your new role, and we wish you every success as you take this next step in your RAF Reserves career.

It is with great sadness that we mark the passing of Air Commodore (Retโ€™d) โ€œTigerโ€ Tim Thorn AFC FRAeS, who died on 19 April 2026 aged 83 after a long illness.

A remarkable officer and true fighter pilot, Timโ€™s distinguished RAF career spanned decades of exceptional service, leadership, and bravery. From his early days at Cranwell to commanding No. II (AC) Squadron and later serving as Commandant General of the RAF Regiment, his contribution to the Service was immense and enduring.

Known for his extraordinary skill in the air, Tim achieved legendary statusโ€”not least for his unmatched gunnery record and for surviving an incredible number of airborne emergencies, earning him a reputation for having โ€œnine lives.โ€ Beyond his achievements, those who served with him will remember a dedicated leader, a passionate supporter of the Corps, and above all, a genuinely outstanding man.

He is survived by his wife, Rosie, to whom our thoughts and deepest condolences go at this difficult time.

Per Ardua.

Today marks the start of a nationwide commemoration honouring 90 years since the first flight of the Supermarine Spitfire, the aircraft that became a symbol of British courage and innovation.

The RAF is supporting a UK tour by a twoโ€‘seat Spitfire painted to represent prototype K5054, flown for the first time on 5 March 1936 by test pilot Joseph โ€˜Muttโ€™ Summers.

The Spitfireโ€™s legacy is also shared with the RAF Reserves. Several RAF Auxiliary Air Force squadrons including 501, 611, 602 and 603 Squadrons flew Spitfires operationally during the Second World War, proving the vital role of partโ€‘time volunteer aircrew in Britainโ€™s defence.

From 7โ€“17 April 2026, the commemorative aircraft will visit airfields linked to its history.

Flight Schedule
