Today we attested Sgt Stewart as the newest member of 2622 Squadron’s permanent staff. He will be our Logistics SNCO, and was welcomed this morning by the Squadron Commander.

Nothing we do, be that training, range days, or generating people for operations happens unless the right kit is in the right place at the right time.

Logistics is not the bit that sits behind the work. It is what makes it possible, having Sgt Stewart in that role on the permanent staff is a genuine boost for the whole unit.

Welcome to 2622.

Trainee Gunners whilst on exercise recently completed a high tempo casualty evacuation serial as part of their training.

When training to deploy globally on operations the ability to extract a casualty whilst remaining fit to fight is vital to all RAF Regiment Gunners and is a emphasised consistently throughout their training pathway.

Think you have what it takes to be an RAF Regiment Gunner?

RAF Regiment Reserves: Protecting Air Power Since 1942.

The RAF Regiment was formed on the 1 February 1942, after wartime experience showed how vulnerable airfields, aircraft and personnel were to attack on the ground.

Its purpose was and remains to protect the RAF’s ability to operate.

Todays, RAF Regiment Reservists serve through Royal Auxiliary Air Force squadrons across the UK, balancing military service and civilian life. They support the Regular force at home and on deployed operations and exercises.

Their core roles include:

• Protecting airfields, aircraft and personnel
• Ground defence and tactical patrolling
• Fieldcraft navigation
• Weapons handling
• Quick Reaction Force duties
• Flight-line and station security
• Supporting incident- response teams
• Military Aid to Civil Authorities

RAF Regiment Reservists are trained to find, hunt and engage threats before they can attack RAF operations.

Some Reserve personnel also support specialist capabilities. 609 Squadron RAuxAF, for example, operates within No. 2 Force Protection Counter-Uncrewed Aerial Systems Wing, contributing to the detection, tracking and defeat of hostile drones. This is a genuine Reserve capability, but it is not necessarily delivered by every squadron or every Reservist.

The aircraft have changed.
The threats have changed.
The mission remains.

Defend the RAF. Enable Air and Space Operations.

“A reservist is twice the citizen.” – Winston Churchill

We’re shining a light on one of our team — and we’ll be doing more of these over the coming weeks (aiming for roughly one a month).

Meet Luke. By day he’s an Area Operations Manager with Forest and Land Scotland, leading teams delivering operational forestry work. This past week he’s been right in the thick of the Glenmore Wildfire response - embedded in the Incident Command Centre alongside the Fire Service, Police Scotland, the Cairngorms National Park Authority and others.

He’s been providing logistical support, coordinating firebreaks, off-road vehicles, UAV thermal imagery and helicopter water-bombing - helping keep a clear picture of a fast-moving incident so commanders can make the right calls.

This is a perfect example of how the skills transfer both ways. The leadership, decision-making and multi-agency coordination skills he develops with us in the RAF Regiment Reserves go straight back into his civilian role. At the same time, the operational experience he brings from Forest and Land Scotland makes us stronger. Both sides win.

Got a question about Reserve life, transferable skills, or how it works with a civilian career? Drop it in the comments or message us. We’ll answer it in a post or short video.
