Whilst on Standby Duties this afternoon, we took the opportunity to introduce Development Firefighter Davis to branch settings and the practical application. This session was equally beneficial to the rest of the crew, as it sharpens our skills and maintains competency.

FF Davis performed well and we hope these initial steps support him in readiness for his Breathaing Appartus Initial Course.

Over the past two evenings the crew have been sent out to multiple agricultural machinery involved in fire.

Something typically unusual for this time of the year and shows the importance of our commitment to training, maintaining our operational skills and preparedness.

With temperatures continuing to drop, rivers, ponds, canals, and lakes may begin to freeze over—or already have. Frozen water is extremely dangerous and should always be avoided.

While the ice may appear solid, it can suddenly crack, causing someone to fall through and potentially become trapped beneath the surface.

Safety tips:
❄️ Stay back from the edge—wet or icy ground can cause you to slip.
❄️ Never test the ice; it’s easy to fall into freezing water.
❄️ Ensure children understand how dangerous it is to play on or near ice.
❄️ Set a good example by avoiding the ice yourself.
❄️ Keep dogs on a lead to prevent accidents.

As the cold spell continues, we want to remind you of our top tips for staying warm safely:

❄️ Always plug your electric blankets and heaters into a wall socket – not an extension cable
❄️ If you have a log burner or open fire, always use the correct fuel and keep additional fuel a safe distance away
❄️ Ensure flammable material like clothing, blankets and curtains are kept away from open flames
❄️ Never use items like camping stoves or outdoor heaters indoors
❄️ Turn off all electrical items before going to bed
❄️ Ensure that log burners and open fires are fully extinguished when not in use
❄️ Check that your smoke alarms are working

Have you woken up to snow this morning? ❄️

Snowy, wintry weather can cause delays and make driving conditions dangerous, follow these few simple steps to prepare before journeys:

❄️Plan your route & check for delays and road closures.
❄️Leave more time to prepare and check your car wipers, tyres and screenwash.
❄️Pack essentials in your car & take a fully charged mobile phone with an in-car charger or battery pack.

If you’re set to drive in snow and icy conditions, here’s some tips to keep yourself and others safe by:

🚙Using dipped headlights
🚙Accelerate gently, use low revs and change to higher gears as quickly as possible.
🚙Starting in second gear will help with wheel slip.
🚙Maintain a safe and steady speed. Keep your distance from other vehicles.
🚙Keep a constant speed up hills. Leave plenty of room between cars.
🚙Use a low gear to go down hill and try to avoid braking unless necessary.
🚙Steer into skids. Do not take your hands of the wheel or slam on the brakes.
